I’ve always loved Poetry Society of America’s In Their Own Words essay series and was happy to write one for a poem from Splashed Things. My mom wishes I didn’t use the word “dick” in this poem and I have to assume some of you feel that way too. Don’t worry, we’ll get through it together.

It’s true that we cannot possibly do all the things we want to do, but here’s to trying, and here’s to poetry for allowing us to get a whole lot closer than we’d ever get on our own to experiencing it all, to maybe even gaining a deeper understanding of the human condition.

⭐️ Leigh Lucas (she/her) is the author of Splashed Things (Boa Editions, 2026), selected by Maya C. Popa for the A. Poulin Jr. Prize.

⭐️ Her chapbook Landsickness (Tupelo Press, 2024) was selected by Chen Chen for the 2023 Sunken Garden Poetry Chapbook Award.

⭐️ The recipient of residencies from Tin House, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, her work has appeared in Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, Adroit, and elsewhere.
