Walking into film school was a lot more different than i thought, as someone’s who’s still learning here’s what i’ve learnt so far!

biggest one is
connections is key 🔑
The film industry isn’t just a 9-to-5 job.

It’s about building connections, putting yourself out there and gaining experience wherever you can. Get yourself onto film sets, whether they’re paid or not, and don’t be afraid to meet new people. Opportunities won’t always come to you — sometimes you have to create them yourself. Build relationships, make friends and put yourself out there, because you never know where one connection might lead.

Being a good director isn’t just about directing your actors and telling the story it’s knowing a little bit about EVERYTHING

You need to understand camera, lighting, sound, editing and other departments so you can communicate your vision and actually understand how to bring it to life. It’s also about listening, collaborating and trusting your crew.

The people you work with can make or break the experience.

Filmmaking is such a team effort, and having people who communicate, support each other and actually enjoy working together makes such a difference. You can have a great project, but the people you make it with can completely change the experience.

You learn way more from actually making films than just talking about making them.

Theory is important, but putting it into practice is where you really develop your skills. Making mistakes, trying different techniques and working through problems teaches you things you simply can’t learn from a classroom alone. Don’t be afraid to make something imperfect every project gives you experience you can take into the next one.

last but not least, You have to be able to take criticism.
Not everyone is going to connect with your ideas, and that doesn’t mean your idea is bad. In the film industry, you’re constantly going to receive feedback from directors, tutors, crew members and clients. Learning to listen without taking it personally, understand where the feedback is coming from, and use it to strengthen your work is an important part of growi by @leilavisual_
