Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island might be one of the most criminally underappreciated films of the last 15 years - an expertly crafted mystery-thriller where even the most fleeting moment is executed with real intention by the master filmmaker.

Denzel Washington spent time studying real footage and interviews of the real Frank Lucas, but he deliberately chose not to imitate him exactly. Instead, Denzel focused on creating a calm, controlled presence — believing that true power doesn’t need to be loud. This is why his performance is so restrained and quietly intimidating throughout the film.
