I made this track which is actually 3 n half mins last Sunday, I sat down and said right you, make a whole piece today… don’t think too much…I sat there for 10 hours and pretty much came up with what you’re listening to. I kept it simple, plotted out the basic shape and then riffed a vocal over the top. I can’t sing that high so I pitched it up an octave in parts and reversed it in others. Nae samples, built from scratch. Worked 30 odd hours in the toy shop but managed around another 10ish hours mixing it and then about 8 hours making this film. I found a free use animation of a green screen moving figure and edited it with the free use pink clouds. Finding I quite enjoy video editing and this was a great opportunity to try and have a go at something different ☺️ Anyway it’s another expression of my inner world 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍⚧️ by @len_goetzee

One for the Divergents of Neuro, Living in the loops. Featuring my brother Sam on vocals. @sam.goetzee Took me about 40-50 hours to make this music over 2 weeks. No samples used just built brick by brick. Made the film in a few hours. I never know what’s going to come out, always a musical expression of my internal state I guess. Listening to what I’d made reminded me of how my brother describes how it feels living with his ADHD, like carrying a backpack full of crazy paving.. proper chimed with me. I also like the reference to the 80s trend of using broken slabs to make a council estate mosaic floor for your back garden, mum did ours. The weight in the backpack so viscerally felt here in the present but the heavy historical burden of living without a diagnosis for the best part of 40 years isn’t lost on me. Feel like the guitar is telling us we gunner be ok. Anyway thanks Sam for sending me the voice note I know you’re not a fan of doin em hehe ❤️ by @len_goetzee

Me trapped in a Nintendo 64 Day off from work yday and I managed to get into flow state, 15 hours sat at my desk… and this is what came out. Why? Who can say. Where it comes from… I have no clue. Tap for full view of my friend 👀 When you’re stuck, just have fun. Been working on another project this week; a writing thing so I’ve not been music making. Trying to get my flow back but it’s hard innit… spent the day trying to no avail really so I just thought I’d sing along to something to get the juices going. Love this one; ‘Goodbye Horses’ by Q Lazzarus. I took the existing track and just tweaked it slightly to fit the goodbye horses bit in straight after the verse to keep it short. Still can’t quite capture the mid frequencies well enough in the vocal without loosing the interesting textures but yano I’m trying. Wait for the drop 👀 Hello and welcome to the inside of my mind. This is how I’m feelin right now, gave me’sen a bleeding headache filming it! Well this has taken me aaaages to do, 80 hours or so. It’s so hard to focus in the summer isn’t it my God it’s painful but I’ve managed to make this over the last couple of weeks. I don’t know where it’s come from I really don’t. I go on intuition, get into flow state and follow my nose… it all comes from a place of playfulness first n foremost. Anyway there’s certainly a story here… see what you make of it! by @len_goetzee

Unhinged Ace of Base cover 😂 Just found this old work and it did make me laugh.. the timing on those pizzicato strings, the clipped vocals coz I recorded them at a slower bpm, I like it. Oh lads I’m struggling with my focus with this changing weather, keep finding myself frozen in that state of paralysis..stressed and anxious, dithering about… I should go outside…I should work… hours spent walking to and from my laptop to the window, ending up doing nothing at all. It’s a bicep flex 👀 We’re existing in the splinters of fractured timelines, not the splinters of calcified bones, more like shards of glass reflecting back glimpses of moments un-lived, visions of other worlds and dimensions. When I make the music I don’t start with an idea, I just play around and something happens in that flow state… the artifact then speaks to me… the vocal feels like grief but the percussion feels joyful, the French horn full of hope… guess as a person who transitioned later I mourn the loss of a history that reflects who I am now in this body, but I also understand the paradox that I exist now because of the person I was, multiple truths can exist at once. The human condition innit! I’ve worked on this for 2 weeks, racking up about 50ish hours to make a 4 minute track. My focus has been on arrangement and transitions… as always words or lyrics evade me…Aside from that, I’ve been watching YouTube vids on string theory and vids about the fourth, fifths sixth+ dimensions. I’ve been inspired by Toni Morrison watching loads of interviews of her speaking about her life, some woman. Anyway… ✨✨ by @len_goetzee

Wow, wow wow; it’s a super machine! Work in progress. (Some holding vocals towards the end) Making this music has taken about 3 weeks, probs around 70 hours work, no samples all built brick by brick. The film I made yesterday; I took some Sizzler POV footage (copyright free) from YouTube and edited it into what you see here using effects in Premiere Pro. Making this I was thinking about; the othered body; the machine; joy in a system of oppression; the nature of zig zags… See zig zags are ‘glide reflections’ a ‘geometric transformation that consists of a reflection across a hyperplane and a translation in a direction parallel to that hyperplane combined into a single transformation’. WWWWWWWW a line drawn through the middle of this would be the hyperplane; line segments above existing in relation to the ones below but in an altered state. I think of the hyperplane as a horizon; the reflection of mountains in a body of water; parallel universes, multiple existences. Couple of weeks ago I did an artist talk at The Glasgow School of Art. It was a performative talk involving singing, dancing and a whole host of amateur martial arts moves remembered from childhood and my old tae kwon do days. I sang, I danced and I chatted…on the process of building; structure and cycles of routine and the benefits of sitting in the ruins as they inevitably collapse. I spoke about my ‘methodology of bewilderment’, as an artist and also in my lived experience which is just a fancy way of saying I never know if I’m coming or going, how the eye of that storm is the best place to be… although admittedly, not necessarily the easiest. I threw out pink stretchy dinosaurs to the audience, a small offering to bridge the gap between worlds (I work in a toy shop)…this performance was essentially a flick through the pages of a sketchbook from the last 6 months; nothing ‘finished’ as such but just me in this moment. I was so very frightened to do this and talk off the cuff, I planned and prepared for weeks mind. It’s just, I don’t have a linear thinking brain, I’m a rambler; I need to go round the houses a few times before I get to my point, to even know that was the point I was seeking. Thing is, that IS my practice so I was adamant I needed to do it my way no matter how scary a prospect. I took my own giant speaker and wore a dressing gown and sliders as a way of carving out a space unbeholden to the institution, and I danced and sang and nattered right there within the walls of the academy. A performance of authenticity being as authentic as I possibly could. I’ve been in the ruins of that moment for the last few weeks; contemplating..making sense of… reading. I read Corey Fah Does Social Mobility by Isabel Waidner (fave) and revisited Harry Dodge’s My Meteorite….watched vids of fairground rides being dismantled…learnt about the nature of zig zags…and now I’m playing- making work again. ✨✨🌀🌀✨✨ Thank you to the wonderful students, for your time and attention and all the fantastic questions.
