Exercise 19: Work with the Best.

I read through “The Creative Habit” by Twyla Tharp last summer during a self-curated, week-long artistic retreat. I was trying to give myself enough time and space to really figure out my “what” and “why” when it came to art making. During this retreat, I started to realize that dance was really about being in community with other people. Especially people who were better than me.

“Fragments in Order” was born out of Exercise 19. It was a way for me to seek out some of the most talented and generous artists I knew, and get them to be in the same room with me for just a few hours a week. I wanted to create in community, and then share what we created with an even larger community.

Thank you to all the artists involved in this project, past and present. You have made these works what they are. You have helped me become a better artist, a better mover, a better singer, a better person. My gratitude and love overflows 🖤🖤

Come see these artists who are better than me next Saturday, May 4 at 7pm. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Sometimes all we need is a little bit of distance for things to come into clear view. As I look back on the process and performance of Fragments in Order, I’m filled with gratitude for the continued opportunity to dance and make art. It takes a lot of work to be an artist, but the work is profoundly important and worth every minute.

Solo excerpt from my most recent work “Singular Resemblance: Planes of Being”. Score by the ever talented @jhmichels.
