• This is Marianne. We met in France around 1980. A spontaneous reunion in 2005 planted a seed which slowly grew into this story. A story fed on mutual aspiration and my admiration for an unusual woman, small of stature but with a big ❤️ and a strong commitment. Despite a life linked to the bottom of society where social security was scarce and the right to family allowance was cut in half due to a Polish background, Marianne managed to retain a respect for others, a rare humility and thriftiness. She accepted her destiny and her struggle marked her face and her soul. Marianne was the mother of 13 children and a French citizen.
The portrait came to see light of day between 2006 and 2008. It consists of hand pulled photogravures for exhibition purpose together with Marianne’s own hand written testimonies. It has been my wish that images and statements reinforce each other to draw a picture of the destiny of a European woman as a contribution to the on-going debate on immigration. A book entitled ‘Immigrante’ was published late 2010 in a limited edition of 100 and is sold out today. .

Walking down memory lane in gratitude❤️
Seen here my interdisciplinary project Quilts & Portraits from Kutch or Ørkenkvindernes Tæpper in Danish. A story based on love and respect for a very talented group of women. The idea came to me in the late nineties when I was experimenting with the historical photographic process cyanotype at the International Center of Photography in NYC. As the images of the desert women began to develop with a rare presence on the heavy wet fiber paper | realised I had the key to a story about proud women and their beautiful quilts. A story where quilts and portraits go hand in hand time-wise and texture-wise thus putting emphasis on recycling and slowness. Moreover the quilts provide a shining example of the desert women’s artistic capabilities whilst at the same time bringing to light traditional crafts.

Last day today May 15 for my solo exhibition ‘Ordinary splendour’ at Kunstbiblioteket in the very center of Copenhagen. Open from 12-18. I’ll be present 14-18 and would love to meet you.

Behind the title lies a universe of recycling and old stories given new life. Inspired by the raw, charming exhibition space and a lifelong love of paper and textiles.
My focus is on conversations with earth elements, traces and imprints from a lived life and from an ever-changing nature of the world. Fragments of collected discarded and reused material have been transformed into tactile, poetic works of paper, fabric, and graphic prints. A tribute to Mother Earth.

I am grateful for this opportunity. I have enjoyed showing my work in this very special exhibition space. Thank you so much to all involved.

In ‘Ordinary Splendour’ my focus is on conversation with earth elements, traces and imprints from a lived life and from the ever-changing nature of the world. In my archives, I have found fragments of collected material from a long artistic practice and transformed them into tactile, poetic works in paper, fabric, and graphic prints. Thank you so much to all involved for making the opening so special. Your presence and support is much appreciated. I also wish to extend my gratitude towards the Embassy of Japan in Copenhagen.

Velkommen til fernisering
TORSDAG DEN 16. APRIL 16-18
på min udstilling ORDINARY SPLENDOUR
i Kunstbiblioteket.

Ønsker du at mødes med mig på udstillingen en anden dag, så send mig gerne en besked.

In English:
Behind the title lies a universe of reuse and old stories given new life. Inspired by the raw, charming exhibition space as well as a lifelong love for paper and textiles.
The works are rooted in the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which celebrates natural decay, wear, and simplicity.
My focus is on conversation with elements of the earth, traces and imprints from a lived life and from the ever-changing nature of the world. In my archives, I have found fragments of collected material from a long artistic practice and transformed them into tactile, poetic works in paper, bric, and graphic prints. A tribute to Mother Earth.
The found fragments hold layers of lived lives from previous generations carrying stories of care, perseverance, and survival. Working with them is deeply moving and almost feels like taking earlier generations by the hand and together praying for our planet.
In the rhythm of a slow process, I have sought to create a space for presence, sensuousness and immersion.
