Finding my Way - Malala Yousafzai 🤍 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

I got this book half price in the January sale at Waterstones and as I’d always admired Malala’s story of perseverance, I decided to get this. I absolutely ADORED this memoir. A beautiful, vulnerable and moving memoir, it really gave us an insight to Malala’s life as a student at Oxford, her struggles with fame and her battles with mental health. I came away from this book inspired and blown away by this incredible young woman! Read this book! taken in Helmsley by @leoandabook

The Safekeep - Yael Van Der Wouden ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

This deserves every single bit of hype! A really wonderful novel that has some very unlikeable characters, that somehow won you over right at the end!

We are introduced to Isabel - a Dutch girl who lives in her recently deceased mother’s house in the east of The Netherlands in 1961. Her brother Louis one day brings his new girlfriend Eva, and then leaves her with Isabel as he goes away for a work conference. Isabel - ever the meticulous and hawk-eyed girl - notices that things in her house start disappearing… Well it can’t be the cleaner, so it must be Eva… So how does this story evolve?!

A real page turner, I loved this tale about ownership, loss and that you could still feel the remnants of WW2 pulsing through it. A real masterpiece - I loved it! Have you read “The Safekeep”? taken in Scarborough, North Yorkshire by @leoandabook

Iron Flame - Rebecca Yarros ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/4

January was one of my least productive reading months, partially down to this bad boy… At nearly 700 pages long, this romantasy epic continues the story of Violet Sorrengail, Tairn and Andarna.

I absolutely loved ‘Fourth Wing’ - it’s the first book in ages I have 5⭐️ because I loved the world created so much, but this one had me feeling quite bored to be honest… I felt like this book was at least 300 pages too long, with so many additional characters I truly didn’t really care for. However, as is OFTEN the way with Romantasy, the battle scenes at the end completely won me over and had me inhaling the last bits of this book in record time.

Will I recommend Iron Flame? Maybe… I was warned I would have to get through it to get to Onyx Storm (of which I managed to bag a heavily reduced 2nd hand copy today!). Yarros has created a world that has captivated me, and I can’t wait to dive into Onyx Storm!

IRON FLAME and the places I’ve read it in! 🐉🔥

This epic romantasy novel has been a slow burn - pardon the pun - as my first read of 2026. As a result, I’ve read it in some pretty cool places, these being;
• Mexico 🇲🇽
• Belize 🇧🇿
• Honduras 🇭🇳
• Texas, USA 🇺🇸
I love nothing more than picking up a book in a new location, and sometimes transporting my brain in a world completely different to the one I am currently in. Tyrrendor, with it’s dark façades is a lot different to the sunnier climes of the Western Caribbean, that’s for sure 😂

The Wizard of Oz - L. Frank Baum ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My last read of 2025, and what a beautifully written book this is! My boyfriend got me this beautiful Penguin/Puffin classic edition for a Christmas present, and as I’d never read this book before, I thought I would give it a go! And honestly, I can see why this is a classic. So well written, with characters that explode off the page, I would argue that no other children’s book aside from Harry Potter has shaped popular culture so much. I didn’t realise how much I loved these characters until I read this book and it seemed quite apt to read the words “There’s no place like home” - especially when it’s t-minus 24 days until I get home! A great read for young and old 🧙 🫧 💚 🩷

It’s here! My 2025 Best Reads 📚

I managed to get through 30 books this year - which actually was my goal for NEXT year, but these were my top favourites of the year. A mix of fiction, fantasy and children’s books, if you’re looking for your next 5* read I hope there is something here for everyone!

Fundamentally - Nussaibah Younis ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A sharp, darkly comic novel about a British-Iraqi academic who gets a dream job working on a UN deradicalisation programme in Iraq. Through her experiences and an unexpected relationship with a former ISIS bride, the book examines identity, ideology, and the limits of doing the best for people whilst blending humour with serious themes.

I found this book really grabbed me from the first chapters! I loved Nadia - a former Muslim who had a strained relationship with her mother and is fluid with her sexuality. I found the latter part of the book a little slow to read and I was expecting more of a dramatic ending. But overall, what a debut, and I see why this book is getting a lot of love!

Hey everyone - let me introduce myself! 🙋🏼‍♂️

My name is Leo Rowell and I’m a book-a-holic! Yep, you heard that right! 📚

Like all love stories, my first love of reading started when I was a kid - I loved fantasy series and stories about adventure. But then, as I was growing up, I stopped reading as social media took over and reading wasn’t ‘cool’ anymore…

In 2024, I was having a bit of a rough time with my mental health and what started out as reading mental health/self development books then grew into reading fiction, fantasy, romance, thriller and crime novels 😍📖

This year - so far - I smashed my reading target of 25 books, and I’m hoping to try to get to 30 by the end of the year!

This account will be used for my book reviews, book musings, tips and tricks for reading as well as a bit of fun and a way for myself to document what I’m reading!
