“Let’s move like lovers move
To our favorite ‘80s track”

If you know me, you know I love collecting magnets. I have quite the collection in one of my whiteboards at work.

Lately, Julieta and I have started collecting photo booth pictures too. We’ve been putting them up on the fridge, and hopefully one day we’ll turn them into a scrapbook.

Something about this picture made this Olivia Dean song pop into my head. Not sure why, but it fits. It also slaps.

“Cole is the king, most definitely
My little black book thicker than the Old Testament”

“Forbidden Fruit” is easily one of my favorite J. Cole songs off Born Sinner, which in my opinion, is his best album.

The beat is a dope nod to A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation,” using the same Ronnie Foster sample. I remember being mega hyped to hear Kendrick and Cole on the same track.

I’ve always loved Cole’s wordplay on this track and all the religious imagery.

My sketchbook might not be as legendary as Cole’s black book, but it’s filled with random thoughts, sketches, lyrics, photo ideas, and whatever else helps get the creative juices flowing.

Lately, I’ve been using it to plan out some of the final posts for Leo’s Jukebox. Some ideas come together right away, others take a little more time, and some never make it past the page.

“There’s only one beer left”

One of my favorite DOOM tracks. I really mess with the sample and the way he flows on this one.

I don’t really drink anymore, and if I do, it’s only on special occasions. So there are zero beers left, but there’s definitely a Ghost in the fridge.

“Universos de tierra y agua
Me alejan de vos”

We stopped by today to get Mili’s spot all decked out for Día de Muertos and to get Xitlali ready to guide souls to Mictlán.

Long Live Mili.

“A moment, a love
A dream, aloud”

Yesterday we checked out SPARK social in DTSJ.

Super random, last-minute plans that somehow turned into a photo booth session with Xitlali.

Some of my favorite nights are the ones where we just wander and see where we end up.

“Now you do what they told ya”

Flipping someone off is an art form. There are different ways to do it, and depending on how you deliver that middle finger, it can carry a whole different message.

I’d like to think I’ve mastered a few techniques for different situations.

A few years back, I heard about this dude named Robert Ekas who would flip off cops just because he could. On two separate occasions, cops pulled him over and issued him citations for giving them the finger.

Homeboy wasn’t having it. He fought the tickets, got them dismissed, and even sued the police for violating his constitutional rights. He eventually walked away with a $4,000 settlement.

Did homeboy stop flipping off cops?

Fuck no.

Turns out flipping off a cop might be rude, but it’s protected under freedom of speech.

This one goes out to all of you who support a racist system that targets minorities.

“Now close your eyes and crack a smile if you know me
While I spit into the sky cause I miss the little homie”

I didn’t want to end Leo’s Jukebox without posting my favorite cat ever, Viernes.

I like to believe that he dipped way before his time to go wait for Mili and take care of her. That’s just who he was as a cat. Social, loyal, super friendly, and always down to get his picture taken. He was one photogenic little dude.

My sister got him back in October 2012, during the Giants’ NLCS series against the Cardinals. They came back from a 3–1 deficit, won the series, and went on to sweep the Tigers in the World Series. I knew he was a lucky cat.

This song deals with loss and pays homage to Eyedea, one of Slug’s closest friends. My Key = Mikey = Eyedea.

“Late for my prime, but something that was shaped by design
I been running while the others burnt from racing the line”

One of my favorite Evidence songs off Cats & Dogs, featuring Slug and Aesop Rock.

I’ve always loved that line. There’s something reassuring about being cool with moving at your own pace. Not worrying about who did what or when. Just making progress and moving along.

“Like an empty fire
Stand tall, go higher”

Boxing lit that fire and motivated me to train even when I sucked at it. It’s addicting to struggle at something, learn, try, fail, and repeat until you get 1% better.

That “stand tall, go higher” line hits a little different when you know you’re being forced to sit out for a while.

Today I was organizing my gym bag and storing my gear for a while since I’m out of commission. Rather than being bummed about it, it motivated me to heal up, come back, and train harder and smarter than I did before.

For now, that means doing my boring-ass prehab workouts every day, even when I’d rather be hitting the bag.

“End up on Market, busy drunk
Talking to the homeless in the Tenderloin
Digging in the garbage.”

San Quinn has some dope songs about SF. Everyone goes to “SF Anthem,” which is a banger, but “Drunk in San Francisco” is one of those underrated slaps.

It’s always fun to hit the city with a camera and see what random moments you can catch.

Didn’t end up on Market tonight, but I did get some food and wander around the Mission with my camera. Close enough.
