Heliocopris dominus - the elephant dung beetle!

I started this model years ago, and it was gathering digital dust until last winter when I redid the sculpt and started texturing - then it sat again. The drive came back and it’s finally wrapped up. Sculpted in ZBrush, textured in Substance Painter, rigged in Maya and rendered in Redshift. Hair was done with Yeti, and wood/grass background elements are from Fab.

Good borb.

For my insect reference images, I've used the same USB microscope for 12+ years. At this point, the images don't provide what I'm looking for and the shallow DOF makes it very limiting.

After some back and forth, I decided to give macrophotography a shot as a replacement. Still getting the hang of it, but these recent tests are leaps and bounds ahead of what the USB microscopes can provide.

Something new to tinker with is always fun.

Back at the Hercules beetle after the many diversions of summer. Here’s a clip of some earlier sculpting phases after the body was nicely blocked out - getting into mapping landmarks and details before retopo. I work pretty sloppily at this phase IMO but whatever works, amiright?
