🕷️ The work of American avant-garde writer Kathy Acker was experimental and radical. The exhibition shows how she created a new, feminist literary language using transgression and plagiarism.

🏴‍☠️ 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘎𝘶𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘺 includes books, copies, photographs by @brewkathy and Nigel Shafran, rarely seen audiovisual material including a video by @michelauder, and an installation based on The Kathy Acker Reading Room.

The exhibition is accompanied by a booklet with my essay 'Tracing Acker', edited by @emma.j.wiersma
and @thesetwentyoneletters.

🕷️ The work of American avant-garde writer Kathy Acker was experimental and radical. The exhibition shows how she created a new, feminist literary language using transgression and plagiarism.

🩸 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘼𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧 (EN/NL) contains an essay in which I explore Acker's background as a stripper and performance artist and the legacy of her work and persona. I connect my research and personal experiences to themes from Acker's work: sex and the body, plagiarism, feminism, and a relentless thirst for freedom.

The booklet was edited by @emma.j.wiersma
and translated by @thesetwentyoneletters.

Throwback to 'Een bezoek aan de ander' at Dat Bolwerck, Zutphen.

🦷 I was commissioned to make a new work (right) in response to a 'source drawing' by the Zimbabwean artist Virginia Chihota (left). I responded to its shape, colours, and theme of (self) empathy.

🐊'You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory' is a kind of self-portrait, using the picture of a crocodile from a childhood scrapbook as a basis. I associate empathy with care and touch, for others but also for plants, animals, and historic objects. 👊🏻 I'm interested in the edges of empathy. Where do care and touch turn into aggression and appropriation?

✂️Analogue collage for which I used multiple copies of the same PAN catalogue to stretch out the boy's face.

In the 'Objects of Desire' series I warp and deform status objects as a way of claiming them.

Part of the exhibition 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥, 𝘎𝘶𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘈𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘺. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘰𝘧 𝘒𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘺 𝘈𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳 @westdenhaag is a reading table with photocopier. 📠

In the spirit of Acker, who used plagiarism in her work, visitors are free to copy and play with her books.

🩸As a starting point I copied all the illustrated pages from Acker's book Blood and Guts in High School. Most of them feature my hands.

🧤 It's really cool to see how visitors respond to these copies: they make their own versions or interventions and add them to the table. The copies can be taken home and are regularly replenished. It turns the reading table into a living installation.

Last Friday 12 June I gave a talk at Johan Kuipers' exhibition '25 Frames of Fame' at IN TRANSIT, a former kiosk at Zwolle station.

🧑‍🎤With this installation, Johan presents 25 objects, artworks and ephemera from his 25-year career as an artist in the margins.

🦴In my talk I reflected on artist archives, the life of objects, and autobiography. Johan makes us think about fame and success in relation to the creative life by turning his personal artefacts into carefully framed relics. His installation can be considered a shrine for the unknown artist.

🚄IN TRANSIT is a satellite location of @kunstplatformlink
