“It’s ours for the taking,” he said, his voice wavering with fragility, he cast his eyes down towards the ground like he couldn’t quite bring himself to look up and test whether she believed it too.

“We just need to fight for it,” he proclaimed, almost to himself, the city lights bleeding behind him in the dark.

“Despite everything, you’re still that boy I fell in love with,” she said, her hand resting warm against his cheek, her voice quieter than she’d intended, the words had slipped out before she could decide how much she meant them.

She stepped back and looked over at him. His face was still processing what she had just said, something unguarded moving across it, the kind of expression he’d never let her see on purpose.

“You’re still an idiot though,” she remarked, the corner of her mouth pulling into a smile she couldn’t quite suppress.
