LFU...Music Please!

This summer the 9th of July:

After getting home from a long day at work, I decided to put together a mix using all the records I’d just bought at @killacutzrecords , Amsterdam. I’ve always loved mixing this way - right after picking up new tracks - because not knowing the songs (or not knowing them well yet) leads to all sorts of surprises, and that was certainly the case with this session. I did leave out the one track that was a bit of a letdown - because, of course, that happens sometimes too. I’m really happy with the final result - enjoy the listen! This mix starts as Leolectro and ends as LFU because It moves from downtempo breaks to breaks, slow house, back to breaks, funky, disco-house, and finally, deep-toned house.

This time, I mixed the 'old-school' way using two pairs of headphones, since I mostly can't play music through speakers at home in the evening or at night.

If you’re ever lucky enough to have ventured into @killacutz record shop, you’ve probably bumped into Leo at one time or another. A walking encyclopedic knowledge of dance music. His love runs all the way back to early electro and hip-hop sounds, through to the modern productions he works on now - one recently featuring in Eris Drew’s DJ Kicks mix. But back then, it was the stabbing synth of Human Resource’s Dominator which had him hooked to dance music. Eventually fulfilling his dream of playing at Amsterdam’s famous Roxy and becoming a resident at Utrecht’s Shiva. These experiences and his unyielding enthusiasm come through in the eclecticism and precision he brings to his sets. For over two hours, I stood behind Leo as he weaved his way effortlessly through a slew of breakbeat wonders. With multiple people climbing into the booth to get a welcoming hug, but almost always following up with a “What is THIS?”. It was amazing to witness (even if it was an impossibly tough act to follow), and it's an honour to have an hour of the set from @skatecafeamsterdam this month’s show. Tune in if you love your breaks and basslines to listen to a master at work.

Leolectro is my alter ego of LFU in which I make a trip to my electronic roots. 80's electro, early hip-hop, electronic disco and freestyle but also funky breaks and a bit of electro influenced house are part of the Leolectro plan.

For my opening set at Mad House, I have selected a number of dark, mysterious, powerful, and funky records - both new and old - to take the audience on a journey through an intense atmosphere full of exciting rhythms.

This vinyl only set required some restoration due to damage to the needle.

Caution! Bass resonance.

The WOW Crew was founded in the late eighties between Amsterdam and Utrecht, during the first European graffiti wave. WOW has been active for over 35 years and is based onanonymity, consistency, and a lack of commercialization. This is characterized by shared codes, humor, and determination.

I was present at the founding of WOW, not as a graffiti artist, but as a member of the group. I expressed my love for early hip hop by drumming endless cool hip hop beats, mixing records, collecting as much radio and video footage as possible, beatboxing, and, of course, going to hip hop concerts.

Hip hop was the first to develop an electronic music style by using samples. The combination of
fragments from funk, soul, rock, disco, and jazz with the then-innovative drum machines created incredibly cool and unique grooves. To me, it often seemed like a topsy-turvy world: it was only years later that I discovered the original records behind the beats. That same journey of discovery
repeated itself later with the rise of house music.

When I was asked to DJ at the book launch of "Writing Our World - Graffiti Manifesto" on December 18, 2025, I delved deep into my memory to convey my vision and experiences from that period to the audience as best as possible.

With this two-and-a-half-hour recording from that evening, I take you back to the feeling of that time!

Introducing our next guest dj for Future/Past at @basement.ams next week March 28 !

Dutch DJ, producer/composer LFU !

En route from pop, rock, electronic disco, early Hip-Hop, New Jack Swing and late 80s Deep House, Leo encounters the overwhelming rave sound of Human Resource’s “Dominator” during a night out in 1991. When he hears “Charly” from Prodigy a few weeks later, he’s over.

Especially in the Utrecht house scene, Leo is doing his bit along with his DJ friends. Besides his work as manager of record store Mid-Town Utrecht, he is one of Shiva’s resident DJs; Utrecht’s first House club (now Basis). He plays at many parties, at the legendary RoXY and shows his DJ practices abroad. In addition, he regularly goes into the studio to make records with friends.

For nearly ten years now, he has been a key figure at Killacutz in Amsterdam. His record label Casa Meganika received a significant boost last year when one of its releases was selected as the opening track for the DJ-Kicks mix by Eris Drew.

LFU’s closing set of ‘Future/Past’ is going to be filled with Funky Slammers!

WOW (Words Of Wisdom)

Op donderdag 18 december draaien Patrick de Vries a.k.a.
