Another undescribed moth from Australia!
This stunning little species is currently known as Comostola ANIC 2.

In Australia, this moth is restricted to a relatively small pocket of rainforest within the Iron Range on Cape York. It has been high on my photography wishlist for a long time and luckily enough they were quite abundant during our stay at Turtle Creek Eco Lodge.

We truly need more taxonomic research to formally describe these incredible insects and grant them proper scientific names!

The Jade Hawkmoth (Daphnis hypothous) gets its common name from its beautiful emerald green colouration which resembles polished jade. Its mix of green, olive and cream creates an intricate pattern that helps it blend into surrounding foliage despite how striking it looks.

Found across much of South and Southeast Asia, this species is a fast and powerful nocturnal flier that is often attracted to lights. Adults feed on flower nectar using their long proboscis and are thought to play a role in pollinating a range of plants.

The caterpillars feed mainly on plants in the coffee family (Rubiaceae) including species of Ixora, Pavetta and Uncaria. Like many hawkmoth larvae they have large eyespots and will rear up when disturbed to make themselves look much larger than they really are.
