NEW TALK ANNOUNCED!

“The Sinister Shadows of Weimar Cinema: Josef Fenneker, Eroticism & Expressionism” with @lepustra

Step into the lurid, seductive and shadowy world of German painter, graphic artist, film architect and stage designer Josef Fenneker (1895–1956), one of the great forgotten masters of Weimar-era cinema poster art.

From dangerous femmes fatales and brooding villains to bodies caught in pools of light, Fenneker’s posters capture the restless energy of 1920s and 1930s Berlin, and the darker fantasies of an age fascinated by pleasure, danger, sexuality and modernity.

Fenneker absorbed influences from Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and Art Deco, forging an individual style in which the human body became strange, sensual and unsettling. Elongated limbs, distorted anatomy, exaggerated hands and figures emerging from darkness became elements of his visual vocabulary. Rather than simply illustrating films, Fenneker transformed cinema advertising into something macabre, glamorous and theatrical. His posters became works of art, distilling the atmosphere of a film into a haunting image through distortion, symbolism, eroticism and psychological tension.

Many of the films represented by Fenneker’s posters are now lost. His images therefore survive as some of the most evocative visual traces of films audiences can no longer see, offering an extraordinary window into the lost cinematic culture of Weimar Germany.

Through Fenneker’s dark imagination, Weimar cinema emerges as a world of shadows, sexual ambiguity, glamour, danger and grotesque beauty, a place where desire, death and spectacle collided beneath the flickering light of the silver screen.
