Some collaborations feel inevitable, waiting patiently in the shadows until the right time arrives. For years, @trendafilkanola and @lescenelles have dreamed of sharing a stage — two ensembles that approach memory through melody, exploring culture and meaning through different musical lenses, asking many of the same questions: what lives inside melodic memory, and how do we carry it forward? How can songs help us understand who we are, where we come from, and one another?

On Wednesday May 20th, this long-awaited collaboration is finally happening! Trendafilka’s Eastern European polyphony meets the contemporary Creole explorations of Les Cenelles for an evening of soulful songs rooted in tradition, experimentation, and plurality. Each ensemble will perform a full set, and for the first time, we’ll also join forces for some collaborations (eee!!!)

This will be our final performance of the season before we disappear into the summer, and we can’t imagine a more meaningful way to close the season. Won’t you join us?

Free concert, y’all. See y’all in the French Quarter this Saturday (Oct. 4) to enjoy a free concert by Les Cenelles. This program, curated by the Historic New Orleans Collection, will blend musical performances, lecture, and poetry. We also loved working with Les Cenelles (bonjou Denise, Joe et Peter!) on “Musique(s), L’Album”, our contemporary anthology of Louisiana music in French and Creole, presented with the support of the Library of Congress, and we cannot wait for this free concert. Once a 15-million-gallon water reservoir, now an underground stage for unforgettable sound art.

Last week, @LesCenelles brought "Echo Change: Resistance and Reverb" to life in the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern as part of Underground Sounds.

Inspired by water justice movements from Flint to New Orleans, this immersive, multi-channel sound installation transformed the Cistern into a space of reflection and resistance.

Their performance, "Echo Change: Resistance and Reverb", is a spatialized sound experience that centers on themes of water rights and activism. Inspired from Flint and the Water Protectors of the North to the Gulf Coast's water infrastructure struggles in New Orleans and Houston.

Utilizing a multi-channel sound installation, the performance immerses audiences in a soundscape that pulses through the historic Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, inviting reflection on water as both a resource and a politicized force.
