Can you smell it
Inside your home
Has the smoke filled air
Snuck in between the vents of your safe space
Are your eyes watering
Your lungs aching
Are you wondering
How something that happens in another country
Can make your summer sky
Harmful to inhale
Are you wondering
How across the pond
The sun has scorched a continent
Leaving death in its wake
Are you doubled over
In your bathroom
After a leafy green lunch
Are your water bills
Electric bills
Heating bills
Soaring
While you
YIMBY a data center
Are your neighbors put in concentration camps
Or are they shot in the streets
Did you cast a ballot
While saying
Climate change isn’t real
But borders are
are only connected to
Those who look and worship like you
Believing that we don’t share a planet
Don’t share consequences
Don’t share responsibilities
Can you smell it ?
Has it entered your home
Is it surrounding you now
The life you wished for the rest of us
Are your eyes burning yet ?

We pause to celebrate giants
The Greats
World changers
World builders
Black men
Who empower and ennoble
Who create legacy
Where only dreams lingered for generations
We celebrate men
Who grow into giants
Who make paths less treacherous
By their examples
Of what can be made
From minds inside brown skin
Giants who come from us
Create for us
Archive for us
Elevate us
We celebrate them
For their achievements
Their dedication
Their genius
And
Because so many of our sons
Don’t reach adulthood
Don’t reach manhood
Don’t live out the excellence
Of their potential
Because so many of them
Die before they can
With skittles and ice tea
And Toys in their hands
Imagined whistles on their lips
A boat on Chicago’s lake that drifts
Or left behind on islands
As parents who are judges
Keep the Clorox souls pristine
While our mothers
On knees
With tears
With throats hoarse from prayers
Weep over sons who did everything right
Sons who could have made empires
If the empire didn’t silence them
Into eternity

When our giants become
Ancestors
We stop
We grieve
We honor
We celebrate
Their lives
For all the dreams they made real
And
For the ones who will never get a chance

Rest in power
In safety
In community
In peace

Yea,
though We walk through the valley of the shadow of death
We will fear no evil
We will fear no cowards
We will fear no infested waters
We’ve been swimming with gators
Since you used us for bait
Since you hung and burned
our soul mates
Since you labeled us three fifths
Since you lashed us with whips
Since Black codes
Jim Crow
Segregation
Great migration
Black belt
Red lining
Food deserts
A forever moving finish line
And yet we still dive in
Teach our babies how to swim
The swamp has never been drained
You are jealous
That we can dance
on your mud
And remain pristine
make art from
Our scars
Songs from our screams
Defeated because
We melt manufactured ice
Hope when you surround us with hate
That’s why our solidarity
Makes you tremble
And your cowardice
Makes you hide your face

A Black Woman
Sitting on a bus
An echo
A reminder
Victory will always be
The righteous’ fate

I pledge allegiance to the Mothers
Of the united states of america
To the Indigenous
To the Enslaved
Whose lives are why
It stands
One nation
Born between the thighs of
Slavery and genocide
Mothers who
A quarter of a millennium later
With spirits still unbroken
Transmogrify
trauma
into excellence
culture and hope
Who lead brighter than any
Gifted torch
They are where
God sheds his grace
I pledge allegiance
To the huddled masses
The immigrants
The oppressed
Yearning to be free
Seeking out the promise
Of this failing democracy
Knowing that
All of us born
Equal
With the unalienable rights
Promises
Holy Charges
I pledge allegiance to the
Homeless, tempest-tost
The rainbow connectors
The dreamers
The lovers
The brave
The farmers planting justice seeds
Tending to an orchard of
dreams of liberty
from the rivers to the shining seas

Happy 250

On our backs
With our blood
With our souls
With our hands
On our shoulders
With our strength
With our tears
With our ancestors
With their legacies
With our hopes
With our will
With our prayers
With our courage
With our scars
With our lives
With our might
With our genius
With our light
With our magic
In spite of your hate
The children of enslaved
Have already made America great

What is hope
A thing with wings
Flying freedom feathers
A dream that defies deferment
Hope Power lifts the darkness
Hope is humanity’s promise
To itself
To the generations to follow
You can kill the revolutionary
But not the revolution
You can tear down what
our ancestors built
Bury the history
We
the seeds of hope
will sprout
Tears may come
But
Hope floats
Hope is a practice
A verb
A grounding
Holy
This place makes hope tangible
Stand in it
Touch it
Revel in the Joy
That hope birthed
Let hope catch your tears of pride
Hope will water the change makers
Hope is the sun
Rising on the horizon
Rays like arms outstretched
The eternal reminder
Nothing begins without
Hope
