One of the things I love about my work with the Lit in Colour programme is being able to support the creation of resources that help teachers and students explore more nuanced representations of Black families, who lead lives that don’t just begin and end with trauma.

Stories that make room for the personal and familial challenges Black families navigate, while also recognising their resilience, joy and political advocacy. Stories that remind us that Black family life is never just one thing.

Last week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Chinonyerem Odimba about her play Princess & the Hustler, and the experience was exhilarating. Whether in front of the camera or behind the scenes, it’s a privilege to speak to authors about their work and help create opportunities for others to engage with their stories. by @lesley.speaks

I’ve always looked for authentic ways for my profession and my faith to meet.

Last month, at Kingdom Culture, our church retreat for young adults, I led a workshop on navigating the education sector as a Christian. The room was full of people in education: teachers, lecturers and university students.

I centred my talk on the life of Daniel, a prophet and diplomat in exile who served faithfully inside a system that wasn’t built around his beliefs, and did it with excellence and integrity.

As a child, I read well into the night. On Sunday, I hosted a masterclass for @penguinukbooks on how to write and publish a children’s book, in front of nearly 90 aspiring authors.

I chaired my first author conversation in January 2021. The author was Wes Moore, now Governor of Maryland. I knew straight away that I wanted to do this all the time.

Nearly six years on, the stages are getting bigger. I’m building my craft as a literary interviewer, and I can’t wait for the next conversation.
