"We were filming a documentary at Cocos Island, 30 hours off the coast of Costa Rica. I kept asking the Captain if he could pull anchor + cruise all the way around the Island so we could grab some beauty shots. On the 7th day he gave in and found a reason to circle the island for us, convincing the other passengers this was a grand idea. I was so thrilled I’d pulled this off yet he was cruising so fast, I got seasick, and embarrassingly curled up in a little ball while our crew got the shots."

I lost my biggest cheerleader this morning. My mom, the beautiful Betty Faulkner, a fighter until the end, has passed on. At 86, she lived an adventurous life, loving the outdoors — boating, water skiing, riding motorcycles, and teaching people to play the piano.

We had many adventures together, including her semester in Paris at age 60, when I had to fly there to make her attend her courses because she was goofing off too much.

Through all of it, she always had unwavering support for me and everything I did.

I loved her. I will miss her.

This, from a Maya Angelou poem, is a tonic today:

“And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.”

Rest in Peace, Mom. by @lesley_chilcott

Back in 2019 I went to the Kingdom of Tonga to film whales with the amazing @cdimitrius. It was for a documentary I directed called WATSON about the heroic @captainpaulwatson. As Paul sits in prison in Greenland at the moment for being an ocean and whale protector and activist I reflect on this underwater filming, which was a life changing experience for me. There is nothing like a humpback whale looking you in the eye and allowing you to film her and her calves. With Thanksgiving coming up here in the states please consider giving to the @captainpaulwatson foundation. https://www.paulwatsonfoundation.org/donate/ And if you haven’t seen the documentary WATSON you can see it here for free online the @waterbearnetwork www.waterbear.com/watch/watson. #whales #oceans #oceanconservation by @lesley_chilcott

On July 21 2024, Captain Paul Watson was arrested by Danish police upon arrival in Nuuk, Greenland, onboard the M/Y John Paul DeJoria. Danish authorities say the arrest was made due to an international arrest warrant (red notice) issued by Japan, related to Paul’s anti-whaling campaigns in the Antarctic more than a decade ago. Paul faces the possibility of extradition to Japan, where he would serve a max prison sentence of 15 years. Want to help?

Paul has always fought on behalf of the oceans and the creatures within and now needs your help! SIGN the #FREEPAULWATSON PETITION here: https://sites.google.com/view/freepaulwatson/home

WATCH Paul in the documentary WATSON, the 2019 film I directed about Paul and his extraordinary life of activism. It’s FREE right now on WaterBear: https://www.waterbear.com/watch/watson #iftheoceansdiewedie #captainpaulwatsonfoundation #captainpaulwatson by @lesley_chilcott
