I have probably told this part of the story over a thousand times, at various places, in speeches etc. It never gets old. Talmbout the unexpected e-mail in my inbox on an unassuming late afternoon in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. And how that email changed many things. What I don’t usually talk about is the in-between, the very emotional core of that narrative. I had been newly promoted and was slowly settling into the life of Digital Marketing Exec in a film studio. This was a job I had landed right after film school. Then, it felt like a step in the right direction. Every other dream could wait. Besides, it wasn’t like any of those dreams showed signs of ever coming true. Then the email happened. And life as I knew it turned on its head. Most of those moments after that can be remembered in absentia because I experienced them from a distant body. The hustle through the process of acquiring a visa, the anxiety of the life ahead, the prayers. Then having to say goodbye to a year and a half of myself built in Nigeria to return to Ghana, while battling the worst kind of migraine episodes I’ve ever experienced in my life. I got to Ghana sick and weak, at a crucial time in my life when I needed my full strength and sanity. Several hospital visits and labs. Constantly throwing up and crying myself to sleep to escape the banging pain on the right side of my head.

At the time, i sincerely felt I was under siege because what I was going through wasn’t just migraine episodes. There was more. But i got through it—at least the ‘easiest’ part. I was highly favoured in the visa process. Fastest turnout, smooth process, out of the many horror stories I had heard. There is so much in between this process that I would skip.

On the day of my travel, I couldn’t sit up straight. I lay at the back of the car that took us to the airport, a plastic bag beside me as I constantly hurled my innards into it. I didn’t have the strength to continue. My family was worried about leaving me in that state on a long journey to a different country where I knew no one. But this was something I had to do, so I carried myself through everything.

Is There Hope We Will Survive This?

This fear
The fear of tomorrow/ will it take care of itself?
The fear of the unknown/ will we learn to wade through the darkness?

The promises made to self. To family. To succeed.

Is there hope we will survive this constant push and pull,
The tug-of-war between what was, what is, what should be?
The war of hearts
The war of tears
The war of wants
The war of identities
The clash of worlds,
The slashes of words,
The clang of the need to be/the will to outlive the pain
Is there hope that we will survive the expectations we drown in?
the weight of our own ambitions?
the need to validate ourselves/ the ecstasy to reach for the stars/
s there hope we will survive the crushing of dreams?
The snuff of the embers of our remaining hopes?
of our trust in a just world, of a fulfilling life, of life…

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join the Jasiri panel on @newscentraltv for a conversation about one of the most difficult but necessary issues we need to discuss.

We discussed my recent articles and the conversation they sparked around child sexual abuse, child marriage, harmful cultural practices, and the responsibility of communities to protect children.

We also spoke about something I believe deserves far more attention, which is the experiences of the boy child as a victim of sexual abuse, too and the importance of raising children—both boys and girls—to understand boundaries, consent and respect.

In our conversation, it became clear that when it comes to laws and institutions set to combat these issues, Ghana is not starting from scratch. Yes, we have laws and institutions designed to protect children. The challenge is ensuring that those laws are properly enforced, cases are taken seriously, and survivors and families have the support they need.

We also explored how we can preserve the positive aspects of communal child-rearing while being much clearer about boundaries and what is never acceptable behaviour towards a child.

It was an uncomfortable conversation in many ways, but these are precisely the conversations we need to be willing to have.

Thank you to Jasiri and the team for creating the space for this conversation.
A special thank you to @bookish_ezioma for coordinating everything.

Help sign the petition. 🤲🏿 Spread the word.

Let the girls be girls!

The current legal framework aimed at protecting our children from marriage and sexual violence is evidently insufficient. We need stronger laws and more robust enforcement mechanisms to combat these issues. This includes introducing harsher penalties for offenders and implementing comprehensive support systems for victims. Furthermore, awareness campaigns targeting both rural and urban areas should be intensified to try to change all these harmful cultural practices and mindsets.
