Friday, Dec 19th, I had my first solo art exhibition. I’m still replaying the night over in my head. The love and support I felt from all my guests, I will truly never forget. I want to thank every single person who reposted, shared, and liked the announcement, everyone who DM’ed me encouraging words, everyone who came to opening, everyone who’s ever liked a piece of my artwork, thank you to my family, my friends and peers, and to Fourtunehouse for seeing and hearing my ideas and visions. I hope to continue to make art that connects and brings families and communities together 🙏🏻THANK YOU!!!💐 by @letjosh.cook

My first, upcoming solo exhibition, Shadow of Your Smile, brings together a year of paintings exploring Black interiority, childhood recollection, and the stories carried in everyday gestures.
Opening December 19th at Fourtunehouse Art Center.
Thank you to everyone who’s pushed, supported, and challenged me on this path. I can’t wait to share this work with you.

Joshua Cook is a Chicago-born painter and multidisciplinary artist whose work centers Black life, memory, and emotional truth.

His work “Commencement” is featured in our inaugural exhibition opening September 17. This is one of three works of his in the show.

Josh Cook works primarily in oil, acrylic, and digital media to create portraits and figurative scenes shaped by expressive color, atmosphere, and a strong sense of presence. His work explores how personal experiences, memories, popular culture, and everyday imagery influence the way we see the world.

Cook often begins with familiar images or moments, reinterpreting them through painting, drawing, color, and digital media. Rather than capturing a moment exactly as it happened, he is interested in how his perspective of that moment changes over time. Each work becomes a snapshot of a specific point in his life while reflecting the culture and environment surrounding him. This exploration of shifting perspective and memory connects closely to the idea of Magic Hour, when something familiar can suddenly feel entirely new.

Josh’s work will be on view at Magic Hour Gallery, 661 W. Lake St, opening September 17 during Chicago Exhibition Week, September 14 to 20.

Free and open to the public. On view through December.

One of my all time favorites easily. When I was drawing this I kept hearing the musical score in my head. Then I realized this is the first time I’ve drawn Harry Potter in some years or maybe even ever. It was fun capturing the warms and cool tones of the castle and set🤧
