Florida ranked second in the country for school book-ban instances during the 2025–2026 school year, according to PEN America. And I have to say, as a Floridian, a mother, a therapist, and someone who deeply believes in education, I find this incredibly disappointing. 📚

Books give us opportunities to learn about experiences beyond our own, question what we’ve been taught, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around us.

We don’t have to agree with every book we read. Disagreement with a book is not the same thing as believing no one should have access to it.

I believe children, families, and communities deserve the opportunity to read, ask questions, think critically, and form their own perspectives.

What we choose to make accessible matters.

World Mental Health Day is a reminder that taking care of our mental health is part of taking care of ourselves. 💜

Life can be overwhelming, and sometimes we need more support than we can give ourselves. Reaching out, setting boundaries, making space for our emotions, or talking to a therapist can all be meaningful parts of caring for your mental health.

There’s no single way to heal, and there’s no timeline you have to follow. What matters is giving yourself the support and compassion you deserve.

Today is a good reminder to check in with yourself, too. How are you really doing? 💜

Apparently, without intentionally planning it, I’m spending Banned Books Week reading banned and challenged books. 📚

Right now, I’m physically reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire and listening to Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler.

Finding out that both have histories of being challenged or restricted made me think about the conversations we have around books a little differently.

These are two very different works. One explores education, oppression, dialogue, consciousness, and liberation. The other places us inside a fictional society experiencing inequality, violence, instability, and social collapse.

Yet both keep bringing me back to similar questions:

How are people shaped by the systems around them? What happens when we begin questioning what we’ve been taught? How do power and inequality affect individuals and communities? What helps us maintain our humanity in environments that threaten it? And how do we imagine something different?

As a mental health professional, I appreciate literature’s ability to expand the conversation beyond the individual. Mental health does not exist in a vacuum. We live within families, communities, cultures, institutions, and societies, all of which can influence how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

Books can affirm us, educate us, and sometimes make us deeply uncomfortable. But discomfort can also invite curiosity, reflection, and critical thinking.

Protecting the freedom to read doesn’t require us to agree with every book. It allows us to encounter ideas, question them, wrestle with them, and ultimately decide for ourselves what we believe.

And apparently my current reading list understood the assignment. 😂📚

📚 A little reminder to support your local library: I’m listening to Parable of the Sower through CloudLibrary, an app that lets you check out books from participating local libraries. 🎧

📚 Books can do more than tell stories.

They can give us language for experiences we may not yet know how to describe. They can introduce us to lives and realities different from our own. And they can invite us to think about how trauma, identity, culture, relationships, inequality, power, and larger social systems shape the human experience.

The books in this carousel have been challenged, restricted, or removed in schools or libraries and explore topics ranging from childhood trauma and grief to racism, gender, autonomy, poverty, belonging, resilience, and survival.

Some of these stories may be uncomfortable, but protecting the freedom to read does not mean agreeing with every idea contained in every book.
It means protecting our ability to encounter ideas, ask questions, think critically, learn from perspectives different from our own, and decide for ourselves what we believe.

Literature can open conversations that are difficult to begin, including conversations about mental health, trauma, identity, community, and the world we live in.

Which of these have you read? Which book would you add to the list? 📖

📚 Banned Books Week | October 4–10

Books do more than entertain us.
They help us name experiences.

They expose us to lives, histories, identities, and realities that may be different from our own.

They can help us better understand trauma, grief, oppression, identity, power, relationships, resilience, and the systems that shape our lives.

And sometimes, books make us uncomfortable.

That discomfort is not always something we need to avoid.

Reading critically means being able to encounter an idea, question it, disagree with it, examine it, and decide for ourselves what we believe.

During Banned Books Week, we’re highlighting books that have been challenged, restricted, or removed from schools and libraries, including books that explore difficult psychological and societal experiences.

Protecting access to books does not mean agreeing with every book.

It means protecting our ability to read, think, question, learn, and make our own informed decisions.

This week, we’ll be sharing several challenged books that explore mental health, trauma, identity, power, community, and the human experience.

And if you’re looking for your next read, consider supporting your local and independent book community along the way. 📚
