LGL Thursdays, Episode 25: Sofar First Thursday at Black Betty

This week, Pilo got the night off. Sort of.

We handed the reins to Alex Biaya for our first-ever LGL Thursdays takeover, giving us a look at what a gig feels like from the other side of the mic.

The occasion? Sofar Cape Town's First Thursday at Black Betty Jewellery & Piercing Studio in Hout Bay, with Alex and Francesca Biancoli on the lineup.

We've always loved the Sofar concept. Small crowds, unexpected venues, and the chance to discover artists you might not otherwise come across. And this was another good one.

Alex clearly understood the assignment, getting the crowd involved and even catching his manager, Themba, showing off some moves. We see you, Themba. 👀

Massive thanks to Alex for taking over, and to Sofar Cape Town and Black Betty for having us.

Now... who should we hand the camera to next? 👀 taken in Black Betty by @letsgetlocal_ct

Two years ago, Internet Athi released his first single. On 9 October he headlines Artscape on his own.

We asked how a tech career, a self-built audience and a full live band got @internetathi from Khayelitsha to one of the city's biggest stages, and what he's now building so the next artist doesn't have to start from scratch.

The app putting Cape Town's scene back in human hands

You've done it. A show booked, the post up, and then the quiet ask for money to make sure the people who already follow you actually see it. That's the deal every artist in this city has been stuck with, your own audience rented back to you by a platform that would rather show them someone on the other side of the world.

@thescenecpt is three locals trying to walk around that. A guide to what's actually on, a Zine, a place to find each other, all of it run by people rather than an algorithm deciding who gets seen. We're one of the gig-guide curators on it, because it's chasing the same thing we have been for years.

Our new piece gets into how it works, who pays for it, and the question that outlasts the launch, which is whether the city actually opens the app.

Read it at the link, then tell us what you want us pointing you towards. taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @letsgetlocal_ct

LGL Thursdays, Episode 24: Glastonfurry at Woodstock Brewery

We do and always will have a soft spot for our metalheads.

Glastonfurry is a pretty perfect example of why. Ten acts took over Woodstock Brewery for a full day of heavy music, with every cent of profit going to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

The bands were excellent, but what we kept noticing was just how much everyone cared. About the music, about the cause, and about making sure everyone in the room was having a good time.

Also, metal crowds continue to be some of the nicest people you will ever meet while simultaneously looking like they might kill you.

Massive love to everyone behind Glastonfurry for putting local music to work for something that matters.

We'll happily be back in the pit soon.

The European CV doesn't always travel home

Athie Umgido played @awakenings and a run through Ibiza this year. He came home to Cape Town and some weeks still opens rather than headlines.

We sat with what that gap actually says. His tour didn't run on fees. It ran on one @goatcommunity.pt booking in Portugal, a base in Hamburg through @benjamin.adrion @vivaconagua and
@villavivahamburg, and years of not treating people as contacts to cash in later. The harder question is what happens after the first break, when the structure that turns one European run into the next three doesn't exist here yet, and when a city can celebrate township-rooted sound without building a way in for the artists who made it.

Athie says it plainly in the piece. We'd rather you read him than us. New feature up now, link in bio.

LGL Thursdays, Episode 23: KAYA HQ x WOMAD

This week, we squeezed into KAYA HQ for something a little more intimate.

Curated by the KAYA team alongside the WOMAD Festival, we experienced the first of four Indigenous Voices & Storytellers showcases, pairing artists from different parts of the world in a room small enough to actually hear the stories behind the songs.

Volume 1 brought together Dhahabu, Pema Africa and The Official DJ from South Africa, alongside Italian musician Enrico Cipollini. Four very different artists sharing the same stage on Loop Street.

We’ve spent quite a few Thursdays at KAYA HQ by now, but this one showed off the space differently. Everyone was right on top of the performances, the artists could actually talk to the room, and there wasn’t much separating audience from stage.

Also, any Thursday that introduces us to music we probably wouldn’t have stumbled across otherwise is doing its job.

Big love to our friends at KAYA and WOMAD for putting this one together.

You can now find our gig guide on @thescenecpt too.

It's a locally built cultural network with no algorithm deciding what you see. Just people who know the city pointing you at what's actually worth your time. Events, journalism, creative work, all human-curated.

We're fully behind this one. A platform built here, for the people making and going to shows here, is exactly what the scene needs, and we think it's going to make a real difference.

We're on there now as a curator, our weekly selections sitting alongside the rest of the city's. The guide still lands here on IG every week like always, this is just one more place to catch it.

Download it free and come find us. taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @letsgetlocal_ct

About R600 sterilises one animal. Around R7,000 rehomes one after it's already been abandoned.

For three years, a room full of Cape Town's heaviest bands has quietly been paying for the first number.

Glastonfurry Vol 7 lands at Woodstock Brewery on Heritage Day: metal and hardcore, BEAST up top, every cent to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. Most of the musicians hand their fees straight back, the venue waived its cut, and what the scene raises goes to spay clinics in the city's poorest suburbs, stopping the litters before they ever reach the shelter.

Turns out the loudest thing you can do for stray animals is also one of the smartest.

New piece up now, link in bio.

See you on 24 September at Woodstock Brewery! taken in Woodstock Brewery by @letsgetlocal_ct
