Hand engraved copper printing plate for a lesser known penman by the name J.S Conover advertising his work for the Western Penman. This appears to be a different Western Penman publication than the more prominent one ran by A.N Palmer as it pre-dates it by about a decade and is run out of Coldwater, Michigan. Palmer’s was based out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Circa 1860 given the date of publication. I feel like the flourishing style as well as this being one of the last decades penman were reproducing work through engraving before reproduction was largely moved to photo-engraving helps date it too. Love this style!
Plate is roughly 3x4 inches. Engraved by R Martin, NY.

A few pages from a scrapbook I own 1902-1903. Some really notable penman. From first to last: S.M Blue, L. Madarasz, L. Madarasz, next signature is C.P Zaner but I think it could be S.M Blue that wrote it, E.L Brown, F.W. Tamblyn, C.C Canan, the last 3 flourishes are unnamed and I’m not entirely sure who they could be attributed to, given some other pages in the scrapbook I think maybe could be S.M Blue but I’m not sure. Earl A. Lupfer was a professor and one of the founders of the Zanerian school of penmanship. The Zanerian was widely known as the most prolific school for penmanship during “America’s golden age of penmanship”. These are a few pieces from my collection.
Slides 1-7 are Lupfer’s writing. Slides 2 and 7 were prints made of his work for certificates where he would fill in the names. Slides 7 you can see the ink splatter on the left which is why it was kept in his scrapbook and was not awarded to the recipient. Slide 3 was script for reproduction which was done at a large scale. Minuscules are a little over a half an inch tall, outlined then filled in, the top piece on the page is print made from an original, you can see it shrunk down slightly from the size the originals were done at. The ornamental penmanship on slides 1,4,5, and 6 is original and is perfect in my opinion.
The writing on slides 8,9, and 10 was done for him by Zanerian graduate H.B Hague. Hague was a White House calligrapher in the 1930’s and did a lot of amazing engrossing work both freelance and for the White House during the time.
I’m not sure who did the blue envelope addressed to Lupfer on slide 11, and it’s honestly not that well done, but the forms and flourishing ideas I think are really cool and interesting.
The last slide is written to Lupfer by a nun who resided at a convent in New Jersey. There has always been a long tradition of nuns practicing and teaching calligraphic arts, which still continues today, it’s cool to see it for a penman in this era. by @letter.queen

Currently working on the presidents certificate for this years’ IAMPETH conference. I was told to go with the style of P.W Costello. These are some of my favorite Costello pieces, sent to me by his grandson Thomas. Costello has got to be one of my very favorite artists of all time. I hope I can channel some of it for this piece! by @letter.queen

Random assortment of lettering and ornament ephemera ✨✍️
I had a New Year’s resolution to start posting on this account again and it’s already 7 months in lmao. My favorite thing in the world is ornamental art and lettering, my least favorite is probably trying to run a business or use technology. So here we are.
I haven’t checked any of my messages in (at least) months and still might not for a while. I still do art every day even though I almost never post it, but I’ll try to start again 🙃
Currently not taking on new projects. Really want to do this just for fun for a while ♡

A handful of samples of engraved banknote designs cause it’s my favorite thing on the planet. ✨

Been working a full time job and doing commission work full time on the side. I still have a handful of commissions to wrap up before I’m doing more of my own art. I will be posting more regularly once I get to that point. Wish it could come sooner! by @letter.queen
