Café De Druif (“The Grape”) is one of the oldest brown cafes (pubs) in Amsterdam dating back to 1566. Stepping inside the cafe is like entering a small museum and travelling back in time, where you can still see the wooden barrels in which a variety of spirits used to be stored and served from the tap. Each with its name written in the typical curly calligraphic lettering decorating the windows of the traditional brown bars of Amsterdam. The Amsterdamse Krulletter was originally created by Wim Visser, who skillfully hand painted the names of most bars in Amsterdam from the 40s till his retirement, and later on by Leo Beukeboom and @amsterdamsignpainters, the latter being the skillfull hand that painted the windows of this historic café.
A collection of these wonderful krulletters, bruin cafes, and an insightful research on this topic can be found in the book De Amsterdamse Krulletters, by type designer Ramiro Espinoza, and beautiful black & white photographs by @rob_becker_photographer

@splendoramsterdam got letters! This iconic Amsterdamse School gem in Nieuwmarkt used to be a bathhouse, and it’s been home to Splendor Musiekhuis since 2013. Built in the 1920s, it still holds echoes of its past: the old men’s and women’s baths are now concert halls, with studios below and an attic for rehearsals and small concerts above.

Cast iron blue standing Girobus, designed by Pieter Lucas Marnette in 1918 in the style of the Amsterdam School. The girobus was a revolution in payment transactions to collect regular municipal payments without using cash way before ATM existed. Instead of waiting in line at a counter, account holders could drop their giro orders directly into this special blue letterboxes.

Tourists often got confused and giro employees had to reorder some postcards over the years :)

Now, only a few of these blue Giro boxes remain in the city as cultural heritage. This one can be spotted at the east entrance of Westerpark in Amsterdam-West.

I wonder if this is the origin of the institutional blue color of today's tax authorities envelopes? 🔵✉️🤔

(Formerly) Panadería de la Concepción. Carrer de Girona, 74. La Dreta de l'Eixample. Barcelona.

Typical example of a modernist facade with carpentry work and painted panels designed by Josep Suñer around 1900. When the original building dating from 1862 was replaced by a new construction, the facade of the former bakery was dismantled, restored and inserted into the newly constructed building that we can see today at this address in Barcelona.

Following the previous post, here is another beautiful golden letterform at the entrance of the parking garage in the Herengracht.

The parking belongs to the Astoria gebouw (dutch word for building) located in the corner of Vijzelstraat and Herengracht. It was built by G.J. Rutgers after the decision of broaden the Vijzelstraat in 1923, who designed it as hotel Astoria.

In 1928 the hotel was used as the press centre for the Amsterdam Olympic Games, and was later converted into fifteen apartments, two restaurants, a space for shops, several offices and five own parking spots, featuring this beautiful letter sign in its gate facing the Herengracht.

It also was the origin of the name of the Astoria Vastgoed real estate company (source of information for this post) featured on their website.
