As a fellow born and raised New Yorker, one of my favorite things to do while living in different states is to seek out the local pizza spots. Recently, I stumbled upon a place in Naperville, Illinois called “Little Pops NY Pizzeria To Go.” (@littlepopsnaperville) Little did I know, I was about to be transported back to my hometown. As the name suggests, it’s a spot where you order pizza to go. The dough, crust, and sauce of the pizza were strikingly reminiscent of the classic NYC-style pizza I grew up with. Little Pops Pizza brought back memories of grabbing a $1 slice in Manhattan after school, walking home with friends, and savoring each bite while soaking in the vibrant city life. Every bite of their pizza was like a warm reminder from home, reflecting the love and craftsmanship that goes into making NYC pizza. I recently visited Mart Anthony’s Italian Restaurant (@eatmartanthonys), and it felt like a warm and cozy hug. Stepping into the restaurant is like walking into your own den or living room, but with a charming bar right next to it. During Christmas time, the lights glow just enough to give you that “sitting by the fireplace” feeling. It’s truly a place to share intimate moments with family, friends, and loved ones, making you feel as if it’s just you and them, enjoying dinner by a cozy fire. If you sit in the insulated outdoor section, it feels like you’re on your porch or in your backyard. I ordered the Fettuccine Lucia, and it was a delightful surprise. Typically, when you think of fettuccine, alfredo comes to mind, but the Fettuccine Lucia offers a different spin. The dish was rich and flavorful; the creamy tomato sauce was astounding and complemented the sun-dried tomatoes and mushrooms perfectly. The al dente pasta and the grilled chicken, with its “char” taste, provided a feeling reminiscent of a home-cooked meal from your parents or grandparents after coming back from school, evoking that “home and cozy” feeling. From the moment you step inside, Mart Anthony’s Italian Restaurant envelops you in a warm and cozy atmosphere. The intimate setting, combined with the delightful food, makes it a perfect spot for any occasion. Recently, I discovered a restaurant named The Whale (@thewhalechicago). Imagine stepping into a modern-day speakeasy, with lush lighting by day and subdued lighting by night, reminiscent of the speakeasies of the past. Picture yourself sinking into a soft, comfortable leather seat that perfectly complements the elegant surroundings. It’s a place where the old soul meets a new look. I ordered the Dry-Aged Tenderloin, Fresh Cut Fries, and a Codorniu Zero (N/A). The tenderloin was a delightful surprise, mirroring the restaurant’s ambiance: old in soul, new in appearance. The flavors were a harmonious melody, with crispy onions adding crunch and the tenderloin providing rich depth. The arugula tied everything together, like a well-rehearsed dance. The dish came with salsa verde topped with mayo, adding an intriguing depth of flavor. I also tried the habanero BBQ sauce, which expanded the flavor profile even further. Each bite was a step in a dance, hitting the mark on depth, range, and flavor. The French Fries were a classic accompaniment – fresh, fluffy, and crispy. Once thing about me is that I love Chicken and Waffles, and I had to try @goddessbaker in River North! The chicken and waffles were both fluffy and tasty! The chicken was crispy, and the waffles were light. The sweet and savory combination is a classic, making it a solid choice if you haven't tried chicken and waffles yet or have been hesitant to do so. The portion size was generous, and the presentation was appealing and a sprinkle of powdered sugar. The pineapple and ginger juice was also a solid, healthy choice for a morning drink. It had a refreshing taste and gave me a nice energy boost to start the day.The service was friendly and the cozy ambiance of the restaurant made the experience feel like a warm hug.
