American Gangster 2007 was directed by Ridley Scott, whose signature style brought a grounded, cinematic realism to the story. Denzel has said he was drawn to how disciplined, intelligent, and complex Lucas was rather than portraying him as a one dimensional gangster.With Denzel committed to the lead role and Russell Crowe cast as Richie Roberts, the project quickly gained momentum and entered production. The song was produced by David Foster and co-written by David Foster, Tom Keane, and Cynthia Weil and included musicians such as Nathan East on bass guitar, John Robinson on drums, percussion and Michael Landau on guitar. The music video was filmed in Los Angeles' Union Station. It features Khan singing while strolling among several romantically involved couples. It was directed by Marty Callner. Aaliyah's unreleased cover of Donny Hathaway's "Giving Up" was originally intended for a re-make of the 1976 film "Sparkle," which was set to star in after being chosen by the film's producer Whitney Houston. After Aaliyah's death, production of the film was shut down and stalled until an altered version was released in 2012 starring Jordin Sparks. Donny Hathaway's "Giving Up" was itself a cover of a 1964 Gladys Knight & The Pips song written by Van McCoy, but Aaliyah's version directly references the Hathaway rendition. by @levelsofvibes
