This one is incredibly special for me, being the designer as part of the Middle-Earth team that got to make these was a dream come true!!

Plastic Mordor Orcs were the first miniatures I was brought back in 2004 and from that point on I was hooked! So being able to re-do this kit was just a dream project, the Lord of the Rings films have been such a huge part of my life since the day I saw Fellowship in the cinema, and the miniatures GW produced were a way for me to enjoy that journey in a new and exciting way all over again, up until that point I kind of felt lost as a child and wasn’t really sure what direction in life I wanted to take as none of it really seemed to excite me particularly, until I watched the behind the scenes DVDs of return of the king and specifically the “Bigiatures” section where they showed the amazing team at Weta creating the miniatures for the films, and that was it, it all made sense and I felt a direction and excitement and knew “that’s what I’m going to do” - fast forward 22 years and I’ve been able to remake the models that got me started and effectively gave my life a purpose and from which everything great in my life has then come from!

When designing the kit there were a few things I had in mind, we wanted them to capture the feel of the original Perry metals, and there were some helmet designs that we really wanted to see, there were also a couple of fan favorites from the plastic orcs gone before, but this was a chance to refine and tweak those, but whilst retaining their “essence” - for me as a gamer of SBG one of the biggest things I wanted to tackle was the orc bowmen, so may of my friends, myself included have frames with 2 orc archers still attached, and that always made me sad, that 2 of your 12 models may not be used in matched play games because they just aren’t that useful en masse, so making the archers have options to use hand weapons and shields was something I just had to make happen! And I’m so glad I did, there will be no waste for competitive players!

Customisation was also a huge driver for me, and convertibility! #gamesworkshop #lordoftherings #warhammercommunity #warhammer40000 #warhammer40k by @lewiscpaints

I got to work on some of these guys as part of the old world design team, it was one of those projects where all of the technical standards were fighting the sculptural ones, wanting thin and appropriate bones and details, whilst also needing them to be thick enough to have plastic flow through it, and at the same time having the structure strong enough to have plastic gates attach to it that don’t snap components when you clip them off. A real exploration of design for production rather than just sculpture, I look forward to adding a bunch to my Tomb king army!

So carrying on from my last post, these are all of the tomb kings I remastered as the designer in part of a team that brought back some metal old world models into resin.

The two notable changes to design here were with the casket of souls where I combined elements of the base into one piece and also took the top off the casket, growing up I always wanted to know what was inside and had the idea of having it lifted off with souls pouring out, and thought that would be a cool option for people to have, or if you want the classic finish you can just glue it shut Ofcourse!

Thr second big change was too thr carrion, I raised the base of one slightly as I’d always had trouble ranking mine up as a child, and getting the chance to make a 3rd which meant having to march the sculpting style of @monstergirl_trish which was so enjoyable! It was a weird process because I had always wished I was physically sculpting with the legends of that era during that time, and this was one of those really rare opportunities where you get to go back in reteospec and work on the things that inspired you to get you where you are now. - being able to have worked on the original kits created by legends such as Brian Nelson, Trish, the Perrys, Colin Dixon etc just fills me with overwhelming joy - and this is what I told myself whilst thickening EVERY single eye socket on the casket of souls so it would survive the resin process and be paintable at the end 🤣

And finally, I had always been a huge fan of the bone giant and remember fondly saving up enough money from my Saturday job to buy a bone giant and a tomb scorpion, and painting them both that weekend! So when I offered to paint one for the arcane journal along with the snakes and got to do so, it was a really cool moment, it was also an opportunity to display the un-released head on the bone giant which was really fun to paint.

I have a few more of these remasters to show, including the one which is my personal favorite and people seemed to really enjoy the Easter egg too 😆

As the designer as part of the team that brought back lots of old metal Old World models to Forge World resin, this was a really fun project to be able to re-design and modernise elements whilst still keeping the iconic original 90s feel.

The horses were replaced and a Yoke was sculpted that would act as a fitting for both horses and a way to help you build the whole front area of the war wagon so that you could then build the actual wagon and paint it separately then just glue the two pieces together at the end.

Chains were added to the horse armour to help with the feeling of the amount of weight they would be pulling and then finally a different set of wheels added that just suit the rest of the empire range.

But the most enjoyable part of the process was sculpting the enginner alongside the other bits I was doing, as the kit was re-mastered physically using putty there were lots of bits curing as I worked on other bits, and the Engineer was done in amongst that. It fulfilled a childhood dream to be able to have a physical sculpt produced for Warhammer. technically I’ve worked on a kit with the Perry twins 🤣 so awesome!

Another really fun one to design as part of the team, the snow troll textures were particularly enjoyable!

It was great to be able to design these miniatures as part of the team, I can’t wait to see what people do with them!

Along with the new riders of Rohan I shall finally be starting my next army! And I can also add a Rohan contingent to my early third age Realms of Men army as scouts/light cavalry and infantry, can’t wait!

My finished army for this years Throne of Skulls at Warhammer world a couple of weeks ago, one of the most enjoyable army projects I’ve done as it involved a lot of converting and a paint scheme I’ve wanted to do for years. The idea being early 3rd age Gondor just after the fall of Sauron, so the last of the Faithful Numenoreans are still around but the technology and armour of Gondor is advancing, still keeping the colours and helmets of the original Numenor until we see them as they are in the late third age - at least that’s how imagined it and conceited the army :D

Just two weeks untill my 1000 point tournament at Warhammer world, always the hilight of the gaming year for me! This time I’m taking Realms of Men with a Gondor and Numenor king with smattering of both Numenorian and Gondorian troops. The idea being early 3rd age after Sauron has been defeated and Gondor starts its rapid expansion, some of the original faithful remain blessed with long life where as the newer Gondorian lines have started developing their own culture, but have adopted the colours of the numenorean armour and the helmet remains the same.

I’ve always wanted to convert and play an army like this set early in the 3rd age that allows me to be creative within Middle-earth and tell my own stories that are sympathetic to the lore. Also I love the idea of armour/arms development and how that would look going from the Numenoreans we see in the prologue of the films to the minas tieith warriors we see in the war of the ring.

The start of my Grand Cathay army, I think I’ll work on the cannon next, or maybe some lancers.
