On NPR, SCOTUS, Transphobia & “Journalistic Objectivity” — featuring the brilliant @lewispants

Clarification: LRW was let go by Marketplace/American Public Media, which is not NPR, though Marketplace is broadcast on MANY NPR stations & Lewis writes in THE VIEW FROM SOMEWHERE about encountering these same issues at NPR affiliate WBEZ in Chicago (as have I).

but make no mistake:

NPR national sets the tone of what is acceptable to be broadcast on NPR affiliate stations, so even shows produced by APM or by NPR member stations work to make sure they can be broadcast by NPR, which affects who is hired and fired (and not hired and not fired). by @lewispants

Our basement studio is available for summer or fall rental, it’s an amazing space with its own entrance and bathroom that has been used for theater, summer camp, photography, screen print, banner making, soap making, and is awaiting your next project! It’s about 700 square foot with good light and street parking. I would most like to find multiple projects or artists with short or medium term needs to share the space. We live upstairs so prefer friendly cool chill people. Bonus pig and chicken cuteness on your way in!!! DM with questions or ideas! by @lewispants

Happy Monday! Our annual grassroots fundraiser just went live, and we’ve already raised 23% of our goal!

This week, we’ll be sharing thoughts from folks within Press On’s network on why you should donate to us. We are forever grateful for their support and hope we can earn yours. Donate to Press On at givebutter.com/fundsolidarity to help us reach our $8,000 goal by June 5! #LinkInBio

First up is Lewis Raven Wallace @lewispants (he/they/ze), one of our co-founders who currently works as an Abolition Journalism Fellow at Interrupting Criminalization @interruptcrim, a movement resource hub building toward a world free of criminalization, policing, punishment, and violence:

“We desperately need movement journalism right now, and we need more of it and for it to be really good, deep, and digestible.

Press On is one of the only organizations devoted exclusively to that: they are developing the idea of movement journalism, and the practice, but most importantly, they are directly supporting the people doing this work.

It's a beautiful community with a clear vision for how to actually interrupt the assault on our humanity and liberation through media. This is a small but mighty organization that I am so proud to be a part of!”

American politics teaches us to approach things as an individual. @Lewispants Raven Wallace asks what that mindset might be costing us.

In this episode of #TheContext, the journalist and Radical Unlearning author challenges the idea that democracy is purely personal and recommends that if we want a healthier public life, we may need to relearn what it means to belong to one another. by @lewispants

Authoritarianism relies on people staying locked inside old assumptions.

As a journalist and author of Radical Unlearning, Lewis Raven Wallace (@lewispants) offers a hopeful perspective on this week's episode of #TheContext. People can change, and democracy depends on that possibility.

Party people, I'm excited to announce this event below with my dear friend Lewis
who always makes me feel like hope is possible even in terrible times. In this dynamic 90-minute session, movement journalist Lewis Raven Wallace and black feminist performance artist Gabrielle Civil join forces to explore how we might put ritual poetics and unlearning into conversation to transform our communities. Drawing on the synergy between Wallace’s latest book "Radical Unlearning" and my forthcoming book "the holiness of myself released" (on ritual poetics), this event will include reading, performance, and a brief writing workshop. Participants will be inspired and encouraged to explore their own relationships to unlearning, poetics, and ritual in times of political transformation. All welcome. Free and open. ✨ by @lewispants
