✨If only we could grow more tomato varieties than we have room for ✨ This is the thought that every Tomato Head has as we painstakingly whittle our long list of contenders for the season and reluctantly make cuts. Well, this year I tried something new: I grew specific varieties to hand over to a friend, and fellow tomato enthusiast, to grow in her garden out in east San Diego county. The high temps of summer there prompted me to start seeds earlier than I ever have, which is why I too have a ton of ripe tomatoes in early June. Ironically, the hottest weather happened in March when they were handed over as starter plants and it's been mild ever since. This has been the whackiest year. I couldn't have picked a more worthy person to entrust these varieties with as she has been dedicated to growing them AND constantly sharing progress photos and videos all through the season. My only request was to be able to come by once all the varieties were ripe so I could photograph, taste, and save seeds (all of these are brand new to me with limited seed stock - many coming from last year's #raretomatoseedswap). I suggested we do a tasting together last Sunday and it really was the best day ever. Exactly as I envisioned and hoped! We literally hung out and talked tomatoes for 4 hours. It's still early in the season--not even officially summer--with very mild weather, so judgements are still a bit TBD, but I wanted to share our findings and the photos I took. The staging wouldn't have been this great without @lexi10587 collecting all the beautiful flowers, herbs, and rustic display pieces to make this all truly come to life! For those with endless tomato lists and a friend nearby, I highly recommend having your own little grow out to experience even more varieties. by @lexi10587
