Embracing the mess

I was rushing in slow motion
Coming and going
The Mad Hatter steeping his pocket watch in tea
I was confused
Said ‘No,’ when I meant ‘Yes’
Cried a river round us when you left
And when you stayed
You unmoored me
Stole my sense, a thief in the night,
I found myself where the tides converge
Crashing, churning
Turning myself inside out
My marbles ?
Finely ground dust
I was in a state
In need of seaside convalescing
My sensibilities: delicate
My sensibilities: shot dead
I did not know how to hold on to what i wanted
Or ask for what i had
So you left
And i said nothing.
Choked on nothing.
Swallowed my tongue, because I was good at it.
Let go, because I’m good at it.
I am at once wrung completely dry and
A wet rag, sodden,
2x heavier than heavy
I never even said I love you

Thank God the daffodils are still yellow
Inspired by 'Tulips' by Sylvia Plath

It was a frigid winter
Coldest on record
The yellow daffodils couldn't survive
The tundra I had become
The shock of yellow reflected in my mirror
Was like driving into the sun
Nauseating, blinding
Eyes couldn't bloom under their unflinching gaze
Even shut, blood red burned the respite of darkness to ash
The fragrance of your concern wafted,
Piercing the veil of solitude
The cloying sweetness butting heads with the stench of my guilt
Churning all 7 seas of my stomach
I wanted no visitors to my island
No witnesses to my shipwreck
You weren’t supposed to hear the SOS in my silence
Take back your lifeboat
Snatch your red hot poker flares from the sky
I wanted to make my bed in the bones of the whales
Slip into the salty sea without fuss
The daffodils with their precious ruffled hems were fussy
Overbearing yellow baring down on my conscience
Tutting and scolding and pushing
Reminding when reminders were unwanted
I could not stand the disappointment turned towards me
Shame burning brighter than their floral faces
We could not go on like this
They could not be silenced
I could not yet surrender my need for it
I sent them away
With heaviness, with relief
To another room, in another world capable of welcoming life
Until my tomb turns womb and
Yellow can survive

I didn't realize how much I needed to speak these words out loud until after I did. Forever grateful to the ladies of @poems.and.power for holding me in their witnessing as they did

I left a lot of love in Kansas City but left with even more. Between a girls getaway with my mother, a decade over due, and the @poems.and.power Salon, I feel easy in a way I haven't in too long. Chelsie Diane @poemsandpeonies has a way of creating spaces, and experiences that flood the places you didn't even realize were parched. I am reminded again and again how important it is to be witnessed in vulnerability and how important it is to be brave enough to be witnessed. I'm more grateful than I have words to express to be living a life filled with the most inspirational, fortifying women. Shout to all the ladies who embraced not only me but my mother as well. Shout out to Kansas City. And always, always, always, shout out to the art and to the poetry ✨️ 🌹❤️‍🔥🫶🏽 by @lexij625

Mother is not waiting to be saved
she's waiting to be respected
Mother knows best
If only
You'd open your ears
Hearing what shouldn't need to be said
Can't you feel
Her
Throwing her weight around
Not begging
Demanding
Man do right
Take heed
The laws of nature don't tip the scales
Of justice
For ego
Power plays don't work against the real
Powers that be
Powers that send cities into seas
And seas into cities
Take heed
Take up arms In arms
Stewards of the home in
Our hands
Handlers of the abundance
Bestowed upon us
The gift we are not
We, the temporary hosts of
This heirloom
Meant to be passed
Not up
Or down
But over
Over time, hand to hand
Side to side
Around
Like how Mother moves
Pot and ladle in hand around the table
Serving nourishment to our bodies
Amen
Sucking death from bones
Blood from bodies to grow
Round
Our Woman of Willendorf
We have tried to starve you
Whittle you down to a digestible size
Name you Controllable
Ourselves, Controller
But we have never been the force of nature
Only Mother has ever moved mountains

And still a fool
Under the sleepy pale gold of spring
Hope is wiping the cold crust from her eyes
Stretching cat and cow,
Ears perked as if she's heard the call of her name
(or the Pop of a tuna can)
Maybe the jokes on me, thinking this well springs eternal
But
My sense of humor is
Ever green

Where's home
When every right turn is left and every left turn is wrong
And you are at every dead end
With no end in sight
And every sigh hold the weight of the night
And the sun feels fake like it's been pasted in the sky
And the answer to every why is why
And the tears don't come no matter how you cry
And there's no severing the heart from the mind
Or the me from mine
Now you've taken the floodlight trying to find yourself in any line
Trying to find meaning, lost in the language of time
But shelter isn't found outside of the I
Try as you might
Windows to the soul kept shuttered tight
And every last turn returns to the scene of the crime
The place where you tried to abscond into the dark of the night
And leave you behind

My god sends me poetry
That opens my eyes
That stops me in my tracks
That keeps me up at night
Deems me maker, Creator in my own right
Lest we leave the function of this form to the wayside
Like waste tossed aside
But God doesn't waste
(Even if we do)
Forming is the function
Of the breath and the blood warm in the veins of this animal body
Of the ideas that burrow deep enough to root
Of the poetry that God sends to keep you aware
