When Sammy & I were little, she was soft spoken, and nervous- she was always very sweet, and had a deep mischievous streak.

She looked out for other people, and always had a deep kindness in her. A vulnerability & strength that had yet to be shaken by the world. But more importantly a deep and knowing sensitivity, Empathy before we knew the word for it.

As we got older the person that I knew shifted a little, she was still all of those things but grew to be more protective, of her peace, of other people, and of her time. She grew into someone you did not want to disappoint because her expectations could be stifling. She experienced as a teenager the death of her father, and loss as a whole.

Shifting into High School, and then College she was a little weirdo- she was smart as hell but didn’t shy away from a sweatshirt with popcorn on it, or a tube top with a little devil on it.

But this person went on to succeed despite powerful loss and sadness. Sammy was a person who was going to change the World in a LITERAL way, with scientific advances and an aptitude for community building. There was, and are a lot of positive things to say about the person Sammy was.

But-

she was also fallible, and human. She was occasionally selfish, and always had to be right. She was stubborn! She could be harsh when she was upset. But in spite of all of those things- One thing is for sure, Sammy didn’t know exactly how loved she actually was in this World.

The thing that they don’t always mention about largely brilliant people is they’re also often capable of great sadness and grief, and Sammy was no exception. Towards the end of her life- Sammy and I were in a fight, and I wish we could’ve had more time to figure things out.

In the next life my friend! 🫂🖤

I kept putting off posting this, not for any particularly important reason. But now, at the very end of May- For Mental Health Awareness month I’m posting this.

If anyone is ever struggling truly, Please call someone, or anyone. Call my best friend over at 988! Seek Help. The World is tough enough as it is- Please don't let mental illness or a moment of weakness win. You are singular, important, and strong. by @lexlane
