One month.

It’s hard to believe it’s already been a month since I had to say goodbye to my little brother, Johmar. Some days it feels like it just happened, and other days it feels like I’ve been carrying this ache forever.

Grief has changed me. There are moments I laugh and then immediately remember you’re not here. There are moments I reach for my phone to call or text you before reality settles in all over again. I’ve learned that grief isn’t something you “get over” it’s something you learn to carry.

What brings me peace is knowing the man you became. You loved Jesus with everything you had. Even while battling one of the most aggressive cancers, you still chose to serve, to encourage others, to share your testimony, to feed the homeless, and to faithfully worship God. Your faith never stopped because your circumstances got hard. If anything, it became even stronger.

I miss my best friend. I miss hearing your voice. I miss our inside jokes. I miss hearing you say, “Messsyyy bounqueee.” I miss having my ride-or-die here with me.

But as much as I miss you, I refuse to let grief make me forget the hope we have in Christ. Because of Jesus, this isn’t goodbye forever. It’s “I’ll see you again.”

Thank you to everyone who has prayed for me, my family, checked on us, cried with us, and loved us through this unimaginable season. Your kindness has carried us more than you’ll ever know.

Johmar, I hope you’re dancing, worshipping, and experiencing a joy that words on this side of heaven could never describe. I’ll spend the rest of my life honoring you by living a life that points people to the same Savior you loved so much.
