FOUR SOUNDS THREE DISTANCES » CLAV II

“Clav II” is out today. Liam Byrne, Clare O’Connell and Tom Rogerson bring viola da gamba, cello, clavichord and synthesis into ten live improvisations shaped by Renaissance polyphony.

The self-titled album arrives 26 November on Mt. Brings Death. Recorded at Snape Maltings. Produced by Tom Rogerson, mixed by Leo Abrahams and mastered by Sam Slater.

HAPPIEST 20th birthday to my Bedroom Community family! More than a record label, more than an artist collective, it's an indescribably fabulous movement that now reaches beyond any one specific group of people. Driven by an ethos of openness, curiosity, and collaboration, Bedroom Community has produced some of the most gorgeous and inspiring music over the past decades, which has influenced me more than I could ever really express. I'm truly honoured to have been a part of several albums and very many verrrrry fun concerts with this group of wizards who are my role models, co-conspirators, and dearest friends. My life would be very different (and much worse) without you all. H Ö R L A B O R

Das Hörlabor ist ein interaktiver Raum für Klangexperimente. Es erforscht eine neue mögliche Zukunft der Klassiktonaufnahme in dem es die Vergangenheit aus einer anderen Perspektive betrachtet.

Verschiedene Arbeitsstationen laden dazu ein, unterschiedliche Aspekte der Aufnahmetechnik kennenzulernen. Es kann der Klang verschiedener Mikrofone und Stereokonfigurationen erlebt werden, unterschiedliche Mischungen können verglichen werden und schließlich auch ein eigener Mix erstellt werden.

In zwei Hörräumen stehen sechzehn Werke aus einem Hörmenü zur Auswahl. Die Musik wurde für die Lyra Viol komponiert und stammt aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Der erste Hörraum ist ein immersiver Raum. Hier kann die Musik so erlebt werden, als befände man sich im Inneren des Instruments. In einem zweiten Hörraum hält man ein Instrument in den Händen, das synchron zur Musik vibriert und so ein einzigartiges haptisches Hörerlebnis schafft.

L Y R A V I O L L I S T E N I N G L A B

The Lyra Viol Listening Lab is an interactive space for sonic experimentation, exploring new possibilities for classical music recording by rethinking the past.

Different workstations invite visitors to engage with various aspects of recording techniques. Experience the sound of different microphones and stereo configurations, compare a range of produced mixes, and ultimately create a mix of your own.

Two listening rooms offer a selection of sixteen pieces from the listening menu. The music, written for the lyra viol, dates from the seventeenth century. In the emerging room you can experience the music as though you were inside the instrument itself. In a second listening room, you can hold an instrument that vibrates in response to the music, creating a unique tactile listening experience.

It's been a long time fantasy of mine to play this 17c arrangement of Byrd's Ne Irascaris for two lyra viols. Laura graciously flew to Berlin all the way from Melbourne to help me live the dream.
