Pipeline in all it’s glory! It just seems like it was more consistent and more perfect back in the day!
The second reef all time days were a constant occurrence. The regulars were ridding bigger boards and drawing longer clean lines from way out the back thru the first reef swell after swell! The classic Pipeline ride is a rare occurrence these days! Don’t get me wrong the inside reef charging hard crew are supper heavy next level on there 6”4 to 6”6 to 6”8 boards!! It’s just different it’s a different approach and a different Era!

One of the many moments that has fulfilled my life with memories of gold! I was blessed with 3 decades surfing Pipeline! In the beginning I was able to witness and share sessions with legendary guys like Rory ,Gerry ,Jackie,Ronnie, Bird, Taz,Dane ,Marvin,Max, JBG ,Mickey, Mike and Derek Ho ,Cantrel, Adam 12 ,Laird ,Tony Moniz, James Jones ,Phil Perry Greg Apo Harlow ,Hansel, Tom Carroll, Wakita ,Mike Kealoha ,Mike Akima ,Davi ,Chappy,rabbit
Sean Thompson, John Dam, Tom Stone, shit the list is only 1/2 done! I got to witness the history of Pipeline! Late 80s early 90s hope to write a book one day!! Thanks so much to @vincecavataio for the photo!! by @liam__mcnamara

Back in 95 - The wave of a lifetime came my way and I was blessed with the opportunity to catch it!
It was morning after the @wsl Pipe Masters! The one that of course @kellyslater won and @markocchilupo got second!
That swell was dropping but still 6-8 foot of left over west the new swell was rising! 13 feet 20 seconds was the 4am buoy report! I knew we had a few hours before it was going to close out! @twakita59360 myself and a few of us sat there looking at the most craziest 10-12 foot double ups doubling up on the old 6-8 foot west swell!
I looked @twakita59360 and said "let's go"
@kellyslater camr out a bit after us also after winning the Masters the day before!!
Well we got out and after about a hour it started to get supper sketchy! This wave came st me it was not second reef but just a hair outside first reef! There was this crazy looking 2 in one double up! I started to paddle for it and I was on the top wave that was like 8-10foot and as stumbled to my feet (I get up slow one step two step they called me) I started to take the initial drop but as I came down the face I was going over a step as the 2 waves turned into 1 wave!
Well I rode the thing and had no idea what was behind me at the moment!
There was this camera man @photoenglish
He had never shot pipe and he had a film old school camera that took 1 photo at a time!
He got 1 shot!! @tedgrambeau was out of film !There were no other water camera men out it was the kinda day the experienced camera men did not go out !The next day I was parked at pipe in the pipe right away where I always parked (between the now volcom houses)
I had no idea there was a photo of the wave abd was not even thinking about it!
Then jack English walked up like a puppy dog wagging his tail with a big smile!
I looked at him and he said can I show you this!
It was a oversized slide abd he showed me it and I was thinking holly shit!!
Then one of the kings of surf photography Don KIng walked up and said let me see! He looked at the shot and said"that's the best shot I've ever seen at pipe!!

@northshoresurfshop IS MORE THAN A SURFSHOP. IT’S FAMILY.

For 25 years, people from all walks of life—from kids just 14 years old to grandparents in their 70s—have been part of this place. I’ve watched young people grow, find their confidence, and become adults. Some have gone on to start businesses, raise families, and reach dreams they once only talked about.

What means the most to me is being there along the way: listening to their goals, encouraging their passion, and helping however I could as they worked to make those goals real. Seeing that sparkle in someone’s eyes when they discover what they’re capable of—that’s something you can’t replace.

The hardest part for me is to know that the next generation of north shore kids won’t be able to work grow and achieve there goals that we assist with!! And just as hard is to not be able to continue this legacy by hand this business to my kids and grandkids!!

If North Shore Surfshop is removed from Sharks Cove, I believe our community will lose more than a local business. We’ll lose a place that has supported young surfers, workers, friends, families, and the next generation for 25 years.

SMALL BUSINESSES MATTER. LOCAL BUSINESSES MATTER. OUR EMPLOYEES AND OUR VENDORS MATTER. 🤙🏽

The ripple effect is real. If our businesses at Sharks Cove shut down, our employees lose their jobs, and dozens upon dozens of vendors lose accounts that help support their own businesses and families. That impact reaches throughout our community.

It will take food off peoples tables it will impact rents car payments ect ect! This is not Pono and I believe in my opinion there’s a solution!

Please contact Mayor Rick Blangiardi and Councilmember Matt Weyer. Call them, email them, and respectfully let them know you support keeping North Shore Surfshop, Seamaids Beach Boutique, and North Shore Shrimp Truck in business.

in Alekai Kinimaka two Kanaka from “Anahola, Kauaʻi”
In the 80s, we all rode for Willis Brothers surfboards one of the most iconic amazing trips we did was to Honolua Bay with the late Great Craig fineman . Jason Majors. Johnny boy. @johnparmenter36 the Willis Brothers and the Kinimaka Brothers! It was an amazing swell Dirk Mouse got the cover of that rings a bell! Well, “Titus and Alekai” definitely
“taught me. Aloha”
taught me respect and also pushed me to be
“a person who understands”
meaning of spreading Aloha! So when the
“Fires happened”
in Lahaina, I worked with @judlausurfboards and we sent over 100 surfboards by plane by boat and by cargo! We wanted to make sure the people who needed the boards got the boards!! Jud mentioned to me that “Kimo Kinimaka”@royalhawaiiansurf needed help so I reached out to him his son @kaimana_kinimaka coincidentally is also good friends with my kids! So gave Kimo a call and organized to send him some boards and this is how we became friends! Kimo actually went to “Waialua high school” in 1980. I just missed him! And I actually have never met Kimo in person, but I feel like family with him so thanks to all the “Kinimakas”so stoked to call u guys all “Ohana”@maluhiakinimaka @maineikinimaka @kinimakasurfing much mahalo to bradah @kimokinimaka by @liam__mcnamara

Younger brother of @makaimcnamara older brother of @landon_mcnamara and Ledgen! He also has a amazing Ohana in Waikiki his mom is the best @livehea his little brother @kani_tsunami is a word champion longboarder and a top lever water man
In 2007, when he was 12, he came in from surfing Rocky Point and asked if he could use the bathroom. I said, “Of course.”

Later that night, I heard noise coming from Landon’s room. It was late, so I went to check. There was Eala, playing Game Boy, looking up at me with a big smile.

There’s a much longer story, but that bathroom visit turned into more than a decade of living with our family. 😂 He grew up in our home, got married, started his own family under our roof, and eventually moved out. Today, he has two beautiful girls, a beautiful wife @tejianasky father Inlaw @_ryan.atkins_ little brother and sister and mother Inlaw as well!
and a beautiful life.

Our family was blessed when Eala joined us. And the funny thing? He’s the son who listened the most! 😂

Today, he’s a professional surfer getting paid to do what he loves, a Patagonia ambassador traveling the world, and a business owner with his own surf school. He also teaches surf lessons for our shop, sharing his talent and love for the ocean with others.

What makes me proudest is the person he’s become—an amazing father, a genuine human being, and a son I’m blessed to have.

Eala is the epitome of ALOHA. A Hawaiian warrior with so much talent and heart to share with the world.

Shark’s Cove and the North Shore Surf Shop have been part of my life and this community for years. Liam and the crew are family.

If you have kids or grandkids, you know how precious that time together is. Every moment with this little boy reminds me how blessed I am—and what matters most.

Family. ʻOhana. Legacy. ALOHA.

I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in surfing. Yeah, beating Kelly Slater twice in one day at Pipeline is a memory I’ll always smile about. But being a good person, caring for others, and showing up for your community means so much more to me.

When I leave this planet, I hope people remember that I did everything I could to support our community, give our keiki opportunities, and help the sport of surfing grow worldwide—starting here in Hawaiʻi, with my heart right here on the North Shore of Oʻahu.

That’s my mission. That’s the legacy I want to leave. And I hope my grandson feels that aloha through the way I live, the things I do, and the time we share.

Our time here is short, and tomorrow isn’t promised. Love your family. Spend time with your kids and grandkids. Help somebody. Leave your community a little better than you found it.

“Your @wsl Trestles champion”Congratulations to this amazing talented young lady! To see you grown from a little 10 year old girl arriving on the north shore! To being what I always felt was a future world champion! The elevation of the sport with you as the top female I see pushing it to where it is now! Your air game your tube riding and just plain and simple the drive and passion you have put into your career is beyond inspiring! Happy 30th birthday to the second son of the second son of the second son! @landon_mcnamara

Where do I start? Where do I end? What I do know is how proud I am of you, son. I’m proud of all my kids, but today is your day.

You and @darianwailani blessed me with my first grandson, Chas Vehiatua Auna McNamara. In about six more weeks, we pray to be blessed again with the arrival of my second grandson—the second son of the second son of the second son of the second son!

My dad was one of three brothers. I’m one of three brothers. Landon is one of three brothers. Now Chas is about to have a little brother of his own. Those McNamara genes sure run strong! Watching our ʻohana grow is one of the greatest blessings of my life.

Happy birthday, son. May God bless you with the strength, wisdom, and passion to be the best man, father, and person you can be. Always know how much your dad loves you.
