You ran the protocol the way you were trained. The target was set. The client was willing. And the memory still would not move.

Most of us have a client like that. We resource more. We choose a different target. We take another training. And we arrive at the same wall, usually without a way to say why.

Somatic Integration and Processing, or SIP, is our working answer to that wall. It treats what won’t move as information about what the body is doing and what is happening between the two of you in that moment, rather than as a failure of the memory or of the method. It sits alongside the model you already use; it doesn’t replace it.

We’re bringing SIP to Australia and New Zealand on 18 to 20 November, live online, in your time. Before that, a free one-hour info session on Wednesday 21 October, 1:30pm Sydney: 45 minutes on the first question, “whose is the target?”, then 15 for yours.

Autistic and ADHD individuals are accessing psychedelic-assisted therapy, but there is little guidance for the therapists supporting them.

I’m running a new study to help fill this gap. ♾️

If you’re an Australian-based registered mental health professional who has delivered PAT to at least one Autistic and/or ADHD client, I’d love to interview you.

Your insights will help shape neurodiversity-affirming psychedelic practice.

Excited to be presenting alongside Alvita Sam at the APS Clinical Psychology Conference in Hobart, 18–20 September! 🧠✨

Our talk: Autism, Psychedelics, and Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy: What Do We Know and Where Next?

We’ll unpack the current evidence, current and planned research we are doing in this space, the open questions, and what this emerging area might mean for autistic people and the clinicians who work in this space.

📍 Hotel Grand Chancellor, Hobart. Looking forward to connecting with colleagues from across Aus! by @liamspicer_

Our preprint on therapist confidence in schema therapy is now available.

We surveyed 22 ISST-accredited (or accrediting) schema therapists from Europe, Australia and the USA about what shapes their confidence, how it affects their clinical work, and how it has changed over time. Responses were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.

Three themes were generated. First, participants linked low confidence to activation of their own early maladaptive schemas, most often defectiveness, failure and self-sacrifice. When activated, these were associated with withdrawal from experiential techniques, colluding with client coping modes, and difficulty maintaining a healthy adult stance.

Second, confidence was described as developing through personal schema work, supervision, training and accreditation, accumulated clinical experience, and observed client change.

Third, participants associated confidence with closer emotional attunement, greater flexibility in applying techniques, and a willingness to take creative risks in session.

Integrating EMDR & Schema Therapy — Free Webinar 🧠

Excited to share that I’ll be presenting a free webinar for The EMDR Learning Community on “Integrating EMDR and Schema Therapy: A Transdiagnostic and Integrative Framework.”

A huge thank you to Rotem Brayer (@emdr.learning) for the invitation — I’m really looking forward to it.

EMDR and Schema Therapy both recognise how unmet developmental needs and adverse life experiences shape present-day suffering, yet they’re so often practiced side by side rather than truly integrated. In this session, I’ll walk through a practical clinical framework for weaving them together across all phases of treatment — including how to sequence EMDR reprocessing, Imagery Rescripting, and Chairwork to work with both traumatic memories and deeper attachment wounds.

🗓 Wednesday, November 19

Excited to be delivering this one day workshop online in a few weeks for Schema Therapy Training Online. In this one-day online workshop, participants will learn to conceptualise the mental health challenges of Autistic and ADHD clients through a schema framework that accounts for minority stress, distinguish neurodivergent traits from schemas and coping modes, and adapt assessment, formulation, and change techniques accordingly. The workshop will cover adaptations to imagery rescripting, chairwork, mode work, and behavioural pattern-breaking, with a focus on meeting core emotional needs through limited reparenting, building positive schemas and healthy modes, and supporting positive neurodivergent identity development. It will also provide recent research developments, including projects related to schemas, Autism and ADHD, and other important areas, such as dissociation. by @liamspicer_

The Live Recording of the closing set Spice & I played on the Main Stage of Night Mass @dark_mofo in Tasmania on June 20th 2026 is now up on Soundcloud [link in bio].
This was the last night of the whole festival and the energy was high!
As two Tassie locals, it was an honour to be asked to play this closing slot - big thanks to @darrenlesaguis , @bitchy_pitchy & @hollly.etc 🫶
To play a driving, rolling, dark & hypnotic set full of groove to thousands of people who were incredibly receptive & locked in was something we’ll always remember. One of our favourite sets to date.
We hope you enjoy the mix. 🖤

🎥 This 3 min clip captures a live part of the set & crowd on the night - more coming soon.
Massive thanks to @tessrx & @pughsy.au our talented videography crew who captured all the videos/pics of our set on the night & have created these epic after movies for us to share!! *:・゚✧.*・・:*:・。. by @liamspicer_

Exciting publication news!

I’m thrilled to share that I have two chapters in Neuro-Affirming Approaches in Schema Therapy: Working Affirmatively with Neurodevelopmental Differences, edited by Holly Kahya (Routledge) — now available to pre-order, releasing ahead of schedule this November!

The first, co-written with Holly Kahya, explores neurodivergent trauma — how trauma is experienced and often misunderstood in neurodivergent people (Autism, ADHD, dyslexia etc)

The second is my chapter, Neuroqueering Schema Therapy with ADHD Individuals: Healing Schemas, Embracing Self-Compassion and Creating Authenticity — reimagining schema therapy to work with ADHD individuals, employing a range of adaptations and therapeutic techniques to assist in creating self-compassion and authentic identity.

It’s been a privilege to contribute alongside such a wonderful group of authors from around the world including Olga Dobrushina, Sarah Pagdin, Erin Bulluss, Rachel Samson, Alyssa Garrett, Emma DeCicco, Beatrice Ng-Kessler, and Marvin Blake.

I had the privilege of presenting to the Australian Government Organ and Tissue Authority and the DonateLife network on “Autism and Grief: Understanding Differences and Support Considerations.”

Grief doesn’t look the same for everyone. For Autistic people, it may be experienced, expressed, and processed in ways that are often misunderstood — sometimes leading to their grief being minimised or missed entirely. For professionals working in organ and tissue donation, where families are supported through some of the most profound moments of loss, understanding these differences is essential.

We explored how Autistic people may experience grief, common misconceptions, and practical considerations for providing neurodiversity-affirming support during bereavement.

Thank you to the OTA and DonateLife teams for their openness and commitment to supporting all grieving families. Conversations like these are how we make bereavement care more inclusive.
