I read an article recently about the dying trope of literary outdoorsmen. I am neither of those things truly, however I felt compelled after my trip down the Flathead River to share some short reflections.

Sitting in that small uncomfortable rubber boat with these two young men, having garrulous conversations about our country, ladies, Tarantino movies, and of course fishing, I felt an overwhelming feeling of solace. Of course hangin’ with your buddies is always some form of comforting, but this was grander.

I could’ve quit my job, abandoned my career and burned my money in that moment. Maybe Montana has that effect on everyone? My mind was as clear as the crystal blue water. I felt as healthy as the cutthroats that flourish there and as tall as the mountains that surrounded us.

I’d shoot on site to see a piece of litter thrown on that riverbank. It was a refreshing reminder that not every corner of America is grasped by private equity and suburban sprawl. To quote Norman Maclean,
“My brother and I soon discovered the world outside was full of bastards, the number increasing rapidly the farther one gets from Missoula, Montana.” taken in West Glacier, Montana by @liamspoonn

Summers end. A time that has forever presented me with anxiety. Perhaps simply because I soon can no longer wash my days sorrows away in the river, but the feeling is grander. When I break my years down in summers, life seems so much smaller. Who will I swim with next summer? Who won’t I?

Nevertheless, my love for southern Appalachian bodies of water could never fade. Sharing them with the people I love both new and old scuttles memories both new and old. I want my places to remain as that memory, but they can’t, and that’s so terrifyingly exciting.

With the loss of inarguably the greatest Appalachian, I thought this song was fitting. I hope she had a great summer. taken in Appalachian Mountains by @liamspoonn
