🎉 Malcolm & Margaret Carbins Trust Youth Award (15–18 Years) – $3,000

Congratulations to Libby Hoffmann @libbyhoffmannart (SA), winner of the Malcolm & Margaret Carbins Trust Youth Award (15–18 Years) at the 7th Biennial RSASA Portrait Prize Exhibition 2026 for her thoughtful portrait, Birthday Boy.

Through acrylic on canvas, Birthday Boy reflects on life's milestones—moments of growth, transition and celebration that are preserved in family photographs, fridge magnets and treasured albums. Together, these memories create a visual timeline of who we are, who we have been, and who we are becoming.

Congratulations to Libby on this well-deserved recognition and on a compelling work that captures both personal memory and universal experience.

🔸Artist Statement:

A sister is both a mirror and a memory of ourselves—a reflection of who we are and a reminder of where we began. To have a sister is to experience connection in its rawest form: a relationship that remains familiar as the years pass, and one we hope will remain a friendship as we grow old. Together, these shared experiences paint a story of play, friendship, and girlhood.

Unlike other familial ties, the bond between sisters often develops through a cycle of mirroring and differentiation; each sister sees aspects of herself reflected in the other, yet strives to establish her own distinct identity. This dynamic is central to finding personal expression, comfort, and belonging within the female experience. Working with mixed media, I create paintings based on childhood photographs in a scrapbook-like style that reflects my own memories of those moments. Through my work, I aim to form a dialogue about connection and the intimacy of growing up together, and I hope that others will resonate with my work through its narrative.
