Poppy War 🥀สงครามดอกฝิ่น by R.F.Kuang

This book has become one of the most popular BookTok recommendations, however, read it at your own risk!!⚠️

❌It is not a lighthearted, romantic, enemies to lovers, fantasy book — เล่มนี้ไม่ใช่ Romantasy ห่างไกลจากเรื่องรักใคร่มากๆ

📔This book includes Cultural Trauma, Brutality & Horror of Wars, Classism, Colonialism, Addiction, Sexism, and many more as the series progress. — มีเนื้อหาที่หนักและรุนแรงเกี่ยวกับสงครามและบาดแผลทางจิตใจ

🔖I wouldn’t recommend this book to just anyone to read, but I think it is a book you should read once in your life when you’re ready for it. — เป็นเรื่องที่จะไม่แนะนำให้ ‘ใครก็ได้‘ อ่าน แต่อยากให้ครั้งนึงในชีวิตของทุกคนได้อ่านเมื่อพร้อม

While “Timshel” and “Now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good” are a big hit..

I’m giving it to “All great and precious things are lonely.”

and there’s so much more I couldn’t figure out where to highlight because otherwise I’d be painting the entire page. The whole Tom’s guilt part, Cathy’s opening dialogue, Cal begging to be good. I supposed I shall not spoil too much.

If you’ve read the book, which one is your favorite?
If you haven’t, I’m so jealous for you to read it for the first time!

Demon possessions are scary. Being possessed by men, though less paranormal, can also be scary. What if there’s a parallel between both?

Let me introduce you to your next Spooky Read! 👻
— “The Possession of Alba Díaz” by Isabel Cañas

In this historical horror, Isabel Cañas takes us back to the late 1700s Mexico, ruled by the Spanish Empire when local superstitions were strictly controlled by the inquisitor. The story followed Alba Díaz, along with her family, who took refuge during a plague outbreak to her fiancé’s mining town and found her sleepwalking condition worsen. There, she realized that her autonomy was being corrupted, both by the demon that makes move in the night against her will, and the men in her life who took control of what she could and could not do.

I was swept away by this book, surprised by how packed it was with themes I deemed important. From anti-colonialism (Isabel Cañas’s specialty), anti-partriarchy, alchemy, demon possession, religious traumas, all with a sprinkle of some forbidden love with a brooding outsider. The horror aspect of it did not dissappoint, let’s just say I get goosebumps. I just love it when a gothic book criticize the church 😬 I love it even more when there’s female rage.

The atmospheric setting of a foggy mountain, claustrophobic tunnels of the mine, and creepy altar of unknown deities, makes it perfect as a fall read. It offers gothic vibes through a new lense (I ate it up).

I do have an opinion about the endings, which I will not spoil here, but if you have read the book and want to talk about it, you know who to DM hehee 😌

After years of ranting about books on my burner account, I’ve decided to make it everyone’s problem! 🥰 jk but I am thrilled to be here with my (bookish) bestie @praezyd 👯‍♀️

⭐️ Funfact about me: I have opinions (like a lot). I’m not saying I’m always right, but I’ll make it known (here, actually).

So join in, speak up, and stay curious!

📔She who remains by Rene Karabash (translated by Izidora Angel)

‘Beautifully haunting,
Poetically poignant’

The story of Bekija, a young woman living in Albania’s accursed mountains, and her decision of renouncing her womanhood to become a ‘sworn virgin’. A critical decision that later on begs Matija(Bekija) the question: if it was worth it?

The book is written as recollections relaying to a journalist. Childhood memories recount and omitted truths reveal in segments—to us and to Matija(Bekija) as well.

🔖 I had a very high expectation for this one since it’s been shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2026, and I–was–blown–away. However, it did take a couple of picking-up-and-putting-down for me to finish the book in one sitting. Not that the story wasn’t gripping enough, but more so of the book’s severity; I knew I had to lock in to experience this book fully.

It’s poetically written and hauntingly left an indelible mark on one’s mind. It also reminded me of how important it is to read diversely, as well as how small I knew of the world; the feeling of sonder hit me once again (at the ripe age of 23 haha makes you wonder how many sonders one can have in their lives).

And before I go—special thanks to Anji, my good friend, for recommending me this wonderful book. Your recommendation never miss xx!

First post, kinda nervous😬

But it’s nice to (be) see(ing) you all here! With too many words and paragraphs read, I, inevitably, end up with this account.

Would love to exchange some recommendations, thoughts, and rants with everyone.
