Last week, I spent 4 nights in Bauan, Philippines, the birthplace of my grandma.

All my life, I’ve always been proud to be Filipino, but truthfully, I never really participated in the culture, spoke the language, or fully understood where my family came from.

This was the first time I truly experienced Filipino hospitality and warmth to the fullest extent, and realized how deep my family roots really go.

I met relatives I had never met before who welcomed me with a kind of love usually reserved for immediate family.

I experienced the full extent of Filipino culture:
- Realizing everyone in town is somehow my cousin or uncle 😂
- “YOU EAT. EAT SOME MORE.” from my titas after stuffing me with every Filipino delicacy in sight
- Seeing how deeply family is woven into everyday life
- Hearing hilarious stories about my grandma and grandpa figuring life out at my age

After spending 10 weeks solo in Japan, I met up with Josh and Quinn in Hong Kong for 5 nights.

Lots of wandering, neon lights, soup dumplings, and catching up with my best buddies.

Kyushu (southern Japan) ended up surprising me in the best way possible.

I love Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka… but Kyushu felt different. Slower, less polished, just more real.

Somehow ended up on a farm outside Kumamoto for a few days, staying with my boy Toki and his family, helping renovate a four-generation old Japanese house.

Fukuoka was unreal too. Tiny food stalls, sitting next to locals and slurping down some of the best ramen I’ve had.

Spent Easter in Nagasaki, the most Catholic part of Japan, which was really special.

And the random moments in between were the best part.

Spent a few nights this past week in a small countryside town called Kitahiroshima, and it ended up being the most impactful moment of my travels so far.

A few months ago, I randomly came across Kira on Instagram and what she was building — bringing people to a part of Japan most travelers never see. Her mission and story really stuck with me, so I booked a program.

I knew it would be a really cool experience… but it ended up exceeding all expectations.

And it was all thanks to the people.

I stayed in a traditional guesthouse called Astro Park, run by Naoko-san (an eclectic 90-year-old grandpa who moves like he’s 60) and his lovely wife Hiroko-san, who cooked dinner with what we picked from their garden minutes before.

And since I was having way too much fun to leave, I ended up extending my stay two more days with Tak-san, Kazu-san, and Shota at @blue_art_guesthouse where I was treated with so much care and hospitality.

Somehow, I felt like I found family deep in the countryside of Japan.

Even in a place where most don’t speak much English, I felt so much kindness, curiosity, and warmth from everyone I met.

Everything just moved slower out there in the best way possible.

No rushing. No noise.

Just being present. Talking, eating, laughing, and sharing stories in broken English and Japanese (plus a lot of Google Translate).

I didn’t expect it to hit me like this, but it really reminded me how simple life can be… if you actually let yourself slow down and feel it. taken in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima by @libouteast
