“Commissioned for the exhibition Chantal Akerman: Moving Through Time and Space, this monumentally scaled, two-channel video installation deftly delves into the social, psychological, and emotional connotations of smoking. “Women smoking always makes you think of movies of the forties and fifties,” Akerman told me. “You don’t see that any more. And for me, seeing women smoking isn’t really pleasurable.” There is a sense of damaged romanticism that pervades women smoking in classic noir movies of the 19405 and 1950s, whether they are depicted as good, steadfast, and loving, like Bette Davis in Now, Voyager (1942); young, flirtatious, and idealistic, like Lauren Bacall in To Have and to Have Not (1944); or mysterious, seductive, and manipulating, a stereotype epitomized by Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity (1944). No matter what kind of role, these depictions of women smoking are freighted with tension that is most often tied to an intimate interplay between a man and a woman; at some basic level, the cigarette becomes an indicator of erotic potential, In Women from Anterp in November Akerman takes a different tactic. There are no men present, and women are most often seen alone, in pairs, or small groups. They exude a sense of isolation, even when depicted within the context of a group dynamic.” by @libraireork
