My first post! Hi! My name is Lauren and I love supporting libraries. My account is dedicated to doing my best to mostly check out books from the library or get them second hand. I mainly read fiction- fantasy, YA, queer, and I try to keep up with the popular "hot girl books". by @libraryfae

Currently reading: Perfume, the story of a murderer
This is one of those books that gets passed around certain corners of bookstagram. So far, while the thoughts of the main character are disturbing, in comparison to the average person, I'm not finding this book to be as dark as I feel its made out to be. I'm looking forward to watching the movie; I think this might be one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book.

Finally finished all my summer stragglers last week! I completed my tandem read of Empire of Storms & Tower of Dawn, which took me wayyy too long but I'm ready to finish strong!
Sunburn was very good, maybe a little flowery? But a great debut and I'll be picking up the author's next book. by @libraryfae

We Fell Apart by e. Lockhart
I've read one of these "we were liars" books on the beach for the past 3 summers and this is the last one! I'm a little sad because these books are fun, but this one didn't have the same energy as the first one. It tied back into the other two in the series which I appreciate -- I love a connected universe.

Lost Lambs by Madeline Cash
Worth the hype! This isn't typically the type of book I pick up but I kept seeing chatter about it on bookstagram and the hold list at my library wasn't long and I'm so glad I picked this up! Honestly, go in as blind as you can and just see where the story takes you. I found myself laughing out loud many times which was a unique experience for me.

Yesteryear review
I can see what the hype is about. The writing was witty and the story kept you guessing. Burke walks a fine line of disparaging certain lifestyle choices while, I think, not condemning anyone who chooses such a life (obviously not the extreme cases, like we see in the book). The story focuses on a specific family and does not make sweeping generalizations; instead, it casts a spotlight on how people can find themselves in something that was not what they originally set out for, how certain beliefs can shape your reality until it's so warped it's unrecognizable from your original vision. The dangers of drinking your own kool-aid, let's say.
(It's crazy to me that Burke mentions in the acknowledgments that in the drafting phase she was already in talks with Anne Hathaway and Prime and this is her first novel.)

Halfway through The Odyssey! Wilson's translation is very accessible and modern compared to others I've read (snippets of) in college. Excited to go see the movie in IMAX! by @libraryfae

We Were Forbidden • Jacqueline Harpman REVIEW

Harpman is a talented writer, no doubt. This "collection" of short stories was truly just a collection, not a curation. The first one has the sci-fi elements and shared themes we recognize from "I Who Have Never Known Men" but then the next two stories are totally different. The second one feels more like a memoir chapter, albeit one that stills explores the creation of individual character and morality and the weight of choice/standing your ground for your beliefs. The third story was fanciful, like when you let a daydream take you for spin and see how far it goes. It all felt kind of random but like I said, Harpman is a gifted writer and each story stuck with me.

Book review: Mrs. Dalloway 💐
I might have emotional whiplash from all the quick turns this little novel was able to explore in under 200 pages. Reflective, philosophical, hopeful, tragic. We jump into many POVs and sometimes the stream of consciousness of the speaker gets a little boring but then Woolf will hit you with a line that perfectly describes a feeling you didn't know you've had, or one that you haven't been able to articulate and you have to pause and look up from the page to let yourself sit with it. Woolf uses these characters at different stages in their lives to explore the confusing work of getting older, of nostalgia for youth, and conversely, how much more deeper you feel life as you get older and have layers of experience to color your views. There's so much to explore in this novel, I think it's one that you could come back to again and again and find some new part that will speak to you. by @libraryfae

Current reads and recent completed reads.

In a total accident that worked our perfectly, I've paired The Daughters of Ys with The Unicorn Hunters. Daughters is a graphic novel about the mythical city of Ys, a Breton folktale which coincidentally is mentioned in Unicorn Hunters! I recommend this beautiful graphic novel as supplemental reading to Katherine Arden's novel for some added context to enrich the lore.
