Censorship has been used by people in power for centuries, in order to control others.

This is a fact. Another is that it still in practice today and, unfortunately, working in silencing several medias and people, when we should be able to discern it and call it out.

What are some ways in which you see censorship being used?

Background art can be found on the Yale Center For British Art.

Looking for your next read?

Maybe you should have a look into my recommendations of books with political themes to get into! My credentials are a Master's degree in the Political Science field.

These include distopyan novels, fiction, historical fiction, but in the end they all incorporate political themes such as censorship, totalitarianism, classicism, state surveillance, racism, among several others.

I believe these can be a good *first* step into understanding more about politics and its concepts.

Many in my master's have shared about having read those and how relavant several still are today!

If you have read any of these let me know in the comments along with your thoughts! Let's have interesting discussions on books with political themes!

What I've been up to these weeks:

Travelling!!

I came to visit my family and while here, my partner and I have visited around and getting to know about more the historical and cultural past of Portugal!

I've come to know so much more about my country's history that it's making me want to read even more on a huge amount of subjects - Iron Age, Roman Expansion in Iberian Peninsula, the 1st King of Portugal, to name a few!!

My TBR list is also growing each day...

What have you been doing this summer? Have you visited anything fun?

Life has certainly been busy, yet I still make time for reading.

Now that I'm soon going in vacations I'll have a lot of time to read and create book content! Soon I'll post my Katabasis review and even show my gift to myself for graduating (spoiler it was books).

Nonetheless, 1984 has had me reading it slow because I've been writing a lot of notes! It is increasingly scary how many parallels I find in the book and today's reality. Curious to what Orwell would say about this.

What about you guys? Any new reads?

My current read, 1984 by Orwell

"Big Brother Is WATCHING You"

Words that are dangerously and fearfully true today. With governments' wants of surveillance, control

I am interested in how Orwell incorporates censorship, the "hive mind" mentality, and other topics related to authoritarian/dictatorship regimes.

Have you already read it ?

A book that I think should be mentioned more often these days - Fahrenheit 451.

Even if it might be an unpopular opinion, this book has made me internalise how literature and access to knowledge is so important, and yet can be taken away swiftly.

And such is what happens currently with the rise of AI and an illiteracy crisis.

Books should motivate you to think, to challenge you and your way of thinking, make you change.

As Jane Austen wrote, “The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.”

How Katabasis has me

100 pages in and it's incredible! A lot of known names in literature, philosophy, and even politics are mentioned, which is very interesting and helpful to understanding the material.

As I study politics and am used to doing research, this books seems not that difficult to read through, however I can also see why some people would have troubles.

Nonetheless, an amazing book! Have you ever read a book that had you taking notes on the side?

My summer tbr!! A mix of classics and more modern books from different genres! Babel is one I've been wanting to reread and focus deeper on its themes.

I'm excited to read all of these and share my reviews on them, along with how they're linked with politics. Have you read any of these?

What does your summer tbr look like?

What am I reading currently? Katabasis by R.F. Kuang (description in the second slide).

Kuang is an author that I've come to appreciate while reading Babel (need a reread of it), so I have high expectations for this book.

I'm on chapter 1 and I can already say that the themes I'm able to discern are interesting ones (the Seven Sins, religious depictions of hell, hubris, among others!). This chapter has made me think of another series by Leigh Bardugo, Ninth House, which is among my favourites. While both are certainly different, I'm very excited to read and see what other themes will be approached!

And what have you been reading? Share it with us!
