Also pictured are a few snapshots from a wonderful week spent knee deep in picture book dummies and research at a residency with the @bischoffinn. Excellent coffee, breakfast, and books were found at @pressedcoffeeandbooks, delicious dinners were found @roughcutbarbeque and the adjoining Farm Market, inspiration was everywhere @mercerandfonthill, the Odd Fellows Cemetery, and Tuscarora State Park. I highly encourage any fellow kid-lit creatives to apply for their future residencies. It’s a beautiful space to create and applications officially open today for the Spring 2027 cohort!

The perfect new book to welcome Fall. A season of changes and new beginnings, social outings while the weather is still permitting and cozy quiet time cuddled in safe spaces. This story of stillness within community explores personality traits and those beautiful friendships that can thrive between introverts and extroverts. Creamy gouache and joyful colored pencil are all expertly collaged together into a delightful narrative brimming with light and color and texture.

So many little ones (myself included) will see themselves in Fritz, a mushroom who experiments with extroversion to spend time with a friend, only to need some space and quiet time alone to recharge. All the extroverted little ones out there will enjoy the scenes of exploration and play and through the gentle story arc, may even develop a better understanding of the needs of their introverted friends.

I needed this as a child and I need this now as a caregiver, so this falls squarely into the perfect for any age category. We read this snuggled up together recharging after a big day out, an ideal bedtime book full of whimsy and heart, a delightful way to end the day.

Available through our local @midyorklibrarysystem, @fourcountylibrarysystem, and hopefully through yours, too!

The ups, the downs, the ins, the outs, new school years can be hard! Knowing there is a teacher to support you and a classroom full of mates who care, can certainly make the transition smoother. By setting intentions and collectively building a classroom mindset, both students and teachers can find room to thrive and tools to tackle those challenges together.

Take all that knowledge and throw in a comprehensive framework in the front and back matter for implementation, and you get In This Classroom. The dreamy support system is illustrated in full technicolor with adorable, adaptable, amorphous characters. With this team leading the way, students and teachers are set up for a fantastic time at school.

Homes, classrooms and libraries are lucky to now have this quintessential back to school resource available along with all the added activities found in the 🔗🌳🔝 Use when returning to school and also as a touchstone for classrooms to revisit all throughout the year, as students learn and grow and change together.

A perfect introduction for the youngest learners and a fantastic reminder to older students who could use some extra reassurance and a visit back to the fundamentals of their education. The welcome meter and gentle voice make this an excellent choice for reading aloud in the classroom and at bedtime, I can’t think of a better way to cap off the night before school than cuddling up with this book.

Available through our local @midyorklibrarysystem, @fourcountylibrarysystem, and hopefully through yours, too!

✍️ A quick personal note: Andrew is an incredible teacher. It shines in his writing and speaks from his dedication to education for those in early elementary all the way up to adult learners, like the writer and illustrator he found in me. I’m privileged to have worked by his side all summer through the @pbrisingstars mentorship program and I now proudly get to call him my mentor, my teacher, my brainstorm partner, my supporter and my very dear friend.

It’s #KidLitArtPostcard day, Back to School Edition, with a little hesitation to start the first day vibes thrown in

Palette courtesy of a family trip to @munsonutica to see an exhibition of early 20th century watercolors by Charles Burchfield, all set in the kind of whimsical, wonky world, in which I’d like to live

A perfect pick for these dog days of summer. Overwhelmed by heat, overwhelmed by sounds, overwhelmed by summer’s lingering, impending goodbye just around the corner. I think we could all use a little escape to a gentle seabreeze, open spaces, quiet and stretching, a little patch of sand just for us. This soothing story in loose verse champions the extra special level of love that caregivers and friends can offer with ways to ease the overwhelm.

Illustrations filled with pencil marks, relaxed yet deliberate, hop and wiggle amid brilliant pops of gouache hues. Dynamic page layouts box in the cityscapes and open up when the breeze sets in, adding a delightful new layer to the storytelling.

As with all the best children’s books, this one has no age limit. This dog’s summer day is universal, a story everyone at any age will enjoy. Often found in our summer bedtime stacks and in the stacks on the flipside of the year, when we find ourselves longing for the dog days of summer to return. Little ones will appreciate a walk through a hard day that turns out well, tucking them into a deep ocean sleep.

Intertwined words and pictures and heart from the hands of two spectacular storytellers, culminate in an ideal picture book for classroom, library, and home. A braiding craze hits room 203 and brings with it a long winding cord of connection, distraction, and ultimately inspiration. Set against the backdrop of story after story, a group project ends up being so much bigger and grander than the sum total of the classmates themselves.

Brilliant illustrations feature soft, round edges, substantial, jammy textures, and a bold, expressive palette fit for the most sumptuous of story rugs. A story for all ages, I predict that we all will be humming “left over center, right over center…” over and over again by summer’s end. The gentle rhythm and heart warming premise make this choice ideal for any bedtime stack, especially those that can be enjoyed with little hands tangled in hair and bedsheets, as they sweetly fumble around for bits to braid.

✍️ A quick personal note: this copy was plucked from the library and photographed on one of the many story rugs lining the floors of Milkwood. A rural place of creativity and inspiration created by Sophie Blackall and her husband, Ed Schmidt, Milkwood helps braid together the paths of storytellers and uplift creators in the children’s publishing industry. Thanks to them, our stories are stronger and more beautiful woven together, like all of the very best story rugs.

#3MaterialsDrawingChallenge Day 4

I’ve been away at a workshop with @dougsalati & @sophieblackall at Milkwood and decided to go 3 materials for my guestbook entry using a palette that had emerged out in the studio. I was there with an incredible group of illustrators, who I now consider to be friends, and for the sake of the challenge I am still calling it drawing from life. After all, there were endless images of horses and Scamps floating around during our stay, popping up in our conversations and heads and hearts.

I’ve popped in a few other photos from that magical place as a sneak peek for anyone interested and reminders to me of the time we all had together.

Years ago, when Road Trip first came out, this book was immediately snapped up off the shelf by the tiny hands of my little “zoomer” lover and it’s now a perennial favorite, never straying far from their reach. Despite what some say, you often can judge a book by its cover and in this case we were as thrilled with the story and the entire world that we found inside as we were by the eye catching truck driving bear whizzing through the leaves.

Bear and their friends, with their vehicles and cutaway x-ray habitats, provide a comforting backdrop to any day and model the kind and caring community we’d all like to live in. A cast of characters quirky and unique and wide open allow readers to step into each part, viewing a connundrum from different points of view making this a gentle lesson in empathy wrapped in a magnificent world of ink and watercolor and pure imagination.

While written for littles, like all the very best picture books, this story is ageless, still perfect for older readers and just as irrisitible to caregivers. Enjoy at bedtime and enjoy yet again once your little one discovers the repeating acorn car and leaf car motif and asks you to read it just one more time and then perhaps just one more.

A celebration of community and the power of the collective, enough to move bunnies above mountains and bring new possibilities into view. When an ogre and wolf infested forest is too dense and dark to breach, a father, a child, and a determined group of fellow rabbits work together in hopes of discovering what’s on the other side. With a brilliantly muted palette and generous page count, the story is allowed to gently unfold, each illustration at once evoking the traditional yet still singing of something entirely new.

Apt and appropriate for readers of all ages and the perfect companion to a bedtime routine. Tuck littles in at night with a delightful story of curiosity and determination, of overcoming set backs and the beauties of teamwork, of the possibilities and hope of a new day that could soon be here.
