I love me some lady knights, do you? can you recommend me any more?

I don’t have a lot to update you all on, but I’m trying to be a teeny bit more active on here so I’m giving you a photo I took ages ago, before my extensive hiatus. I love a sprawl and I love lady knights (no one will ever beat alanna or keladry for me, but some are pretty darn good)

I’ve been reading a fair bit these last weeks (yay!) - making decent progress on my arc backlog 🫪 - we will see how the month as a whole turns out but I can feel my reading momentum returning!!! great news for me. I’m easing my way into more ambitious and emotionally challenging (e.g., bleak) reads and have been sticking with more romance and lighter romantasy for now. my brain is a very delicately balanced ecosystem these days and I don’t think I can take grimdark by @libraryoflinz

books that’ve impressed me!

idk bout y’all, but this year has been below average for me in how much I’ve enjoyed the books I’ve read. like I’ve fallen into slumps so many times because of the duds I’ve picked up. on the other hand, there have been a handful of really solid to amazing reads, so I wanted to highlight them all together here!

titles and ratings >

1. the winged game: 4.5 (arc)
2. the poet empress: 5 (arc)
3. holy terrors: 4.75
4. the red winter: 4
5. weavingshaw: 4.5
6. this kingdom will not kill me: 4.5 (arc)
7. dark heir: 4.5

if you scrolled this far: hi hello hi! hope you’re doing well! by @libraryoflinz

hello friends! did you miss me? I’ve been largely off of booksta (except popping in every once in a while to lurk) since february because I really lost my love for it and was going through a rollercoaster of reading slumps. I’m cautiously coming back (as in, maybe a 1-2 times a week for now) and back in the swing of reading a bit more these days

I have missed the people on here most of all, so I’d love to hear about anything major, cool, or funny that’s happened to you this year- it’s catch up time! please tell me what’s been going on with you!!!

happy valentine’s day! which heart emoji is your favorite?
I’m a fan of ♥️ and 💕

I think the only thing this post has going for it today is the red. tbh not any other vday relevance. but I got my illumicrate versions of this book and the sequel yesterday so I needed to get this post out ahead of those! I’m super excited to read the sequel because I loved the scorpion and the night blossom! by @libraryoflinz

if last year was the year of the lady knight, what is your hope for a theme in publishing this year?

here’s a feature of some lady knight (and lady-knight-adjacent) books, most of which published last year. I had to throw in my girl Alanna because she is THE lady knight and deserves all her flowers all the time

I’m so happy Owlcrate did an edition of the everlasting… I think it’s the best SE of the lot (IC isle of the silver sea was also pretty good) by @libraryoflinz

q: prologues: love ‘em? hate ‘em? feel indifferent about ‘em?

this question is not at all related to the post but I recently realized some people have strong opinions about prologues and as a “barely distinguishes them from a normal chapter” reader, I was surprised. so now I’m here trying to investigate public opinion

okay, so these photos were taken for my jan recap. but then another jan read arrived in the mail so I wanted to retake it (esp. since that one was read as an arc). so that leaves this photo without a home! thus, it’s getting posted today with none of my recap information :) by @libraryoflinz

have you read any of these? any you especially recommend? (and while I know the poet empress is good, you’re welcome to tell me again in the comments)

or, if you’re also intending to read one, I want to hear about it!

these are my February tbr hopefuls. most are books that were hopefuls from month(s) past so you probably don’t see a lot of new books here. also three of these I owe arc reviews for (the rebel and the rose, the poet empress, and fallen city) and one is a middle book in the series while I have the next as an arc. so Feb is really arc madness (lowkey that seems like it makes more sense for mARCh now that I think about it…. should I carry on next month and make it a challenge?) by @libraryoflinz

we’re going basic today- just a month stack! I’m working on my january recap (took the photo yesterday!) but it takes a long time to actually do 🫩

I’ve been reading reading reading! I’m on an arc hot streak (5 in a row so far!) that’s pretty good! 76% currently and crawling my way back up to a good ratio lol

do you self-insert when you read?

I’m asking because I’ve seen a lot of discussion about it recently and I’m curious what immersion in a book looks like for other people. I’m personally very much a third-person observer in everything I read, fantasy and romance alike. and I think it maybe affects my taste, particularly involving how angsty and messed up I like my reads

this is illumicrate’s edition of the isle in the silver sea, which I enjoyed! (originally read as an arc, thank you to @orbitbooks_us )

I gave it 4.5 stars, review below:

another anti-imperial lady knight book for the year! love it! and another angsty sapphic fantasy from tasha suri!

this is a VERY ambitious book and so even though there are pieces that didn’t work for me, there are also a lot of things that did work. the story and world are intricate and complex without it feeling burdensome for the reader. the overall conceit of this story is just SO good, and I really loved being surprised by some aspects of how it played out and predicting others. we also get pretty sophisticated commentary on national identity and racism and empire from the overall cast of characters and the narrative. I liked the forbidden/cursed romance arc and ended up being quite moved by the central romance; we did really get to see it build.

the book switches frequently between the macro—folktales, repetition, the history of the isle—and the micro—our characters and their emotions—and makes corresponding changes to the prose and framing. these switches didn’t feel fluid or natural to me. I would have preferred being squarely in our character’s brains and letting the themes be emergent, rather than explicitly switching to discussing the arc of their stories. I am sympathetic to how tricky this balance would be, though.

I feel like this book probably took on a little too much for its page space, but the overall effect is still powerful and moving, and overall quite enjoyable to read. by @libraryoflinz

remember that red but unread challenge from months ago? guess who is doing it now and counting it as a belated january birthstone stack?

january was kinda slumpy but mostly because work was busy and i was going through a [redacted] obsession phase. I’m not out of it yet but I did buckle down and start reading more. and I got through a decent number of arcs in the backlog! I have a couple more arcs in the immediate-reads category and I think I may be able to boost myself back into that sweet sweet 80%< category soon

q: how was january as a reading month?

q: in terms of life or reading, has 2026 been as expected yet? by @libraryoflinz

thought I’d give my edges a break… they deserve it y’know? and it made me fall in love again with some of the dust jacket spines

q: are your shelves mostly edges out or spines out?

obviously this question favors those who collect SEs so I have a second question

q: do you believe in shelving series together? what about all books by a particular author? by @libraryoflinz

q: what are you currently reading?
or,
q: how do you feel about character-art centric book covers?

I’m reading red city now! I’ve been threatening to for ages but now I finally have only a few days left on my hold so I’m sending it! great so far (~15% in) - I like the prose and setting and complicatedness of the characters.

I really like this edition and all of the character art we get. this is an example of character art on a cover that I like… I don’t like when it seems like they’re being posed for photo day (especially seems to happen when it’s a het couple for a romance). there’s a certain archetype of hyperrealistic art of two instagram models that I really really don’t enjoy. but in action, with an interesting art style, I can really enjoy it! by @libraryoflinz
