Celebrating Frank Herbert, author of the science fiction masterpiece Dune series. Dune was rejected by 20 publishers before being picked up by Sterling Lanier (author of Heiro’s Journey) at Chilton. Frank’s exploration of the dangers of charismatic leadership, intersection of religion and political control, ecological scarcity, and human evolution continue to mesmerize in print and on screen. The first four books of the series are for me an unending source of fascination.

Celebrating Dave Arneson, visionary game designer and co-developer of Dungeons & Dragons, on his birthday! Dave and his Minneapolis gaming friends came up with core mechanics that came to define the RPG genre, including collaborative storytelling, the role of the game master, and the concept of ongoing campaign-level play. Thank you, Dave!

Finished reading Bring Up The Bodies over the weekend and started The Hobbit last night. If you enjoy historical fiction, it doesn’t get much better than Hilary Mantel though I did enjoy Wolf Hall more. With cozy season upon us, it seemed the right time to revisit Middle-earth. What are you reading?
