“Now, it’s not being pop, it’s just being in the world. Our work is in the world,” says Arthur Jafa.

For Jafa and Mohamed Bourouissa, popular culture isn’t something that sits apart from art. Comics, manga, rap, Marvel, French hip-hop and the images they grew up around exist alongside art history as part of the same visual vocabulary.

Brought together in London for POP, #Issue07 of Dazed MENA, the two artists pick up a conversation that began years ago. In conversation with Tamar Clarke-Brown, they move through representation and its limits, violence and its fallout, instinct, sound, and what happens when work escapes its maker and enters popular culture. In collaboration with @akonieyewear TANK invited three creatives to Order an Object from @vam_east Storehouse service. Anmol Ahuja @anmolahuja94 selected a drawing by Oliver Messel for Akira Kurosawa’s film Rashomon, the “Kodaslide 40” - a projector designed in 1961 by Kenneth Grange, and the Agra Colonnade, which once formed part of a hammam built for Shah Jahan. Tamar Clarke-Brown @licklemore_ selected the Sony DD-1EX Electronic Book Player, the world’s first electronic reader, released in 1991, a teak mancala board, and a swathe of fabric from Japanese design studio NUNO Corporation. Ingrid Schroder @iis1000 picked a 17th-century stained glass panel depicting the Biblical parable of The Prodigal Son, the “Djerba” dress, part of Lanvin’s SS71 Collection, and a 17th-century Dutch kitchen cabinet.

Coming up: Dancing for the algorithm, ludic inquiries and games as civic engines!

On April 14, we invite you to a day of talks and hands-on workshops with three professionals pushing at the edges of games, technology and civic life.

✨First we hear three talks:
Curator of Arts Technologies at Serpetine Gallery Tamar Clarke-Brown on games and tech as tools for artistic production and public good; Artist Nina Davies on choreography inside predictive data-driven environments and what the body knows that language doesn’t; Researcher and game-maker Leland Masek on games as a research methodology, and play as a form of meaning-making.

In the afternoon we gather into groups to think together about how art and gaming can activate participation in public life.

Art, Gaming and Civic Realms workshop lectures are free and open to all. No prior experience with games needed. Participation language is English.

🎮 Read more and register via link in bio!

Organised in Collaboration with Aalto university Media Lab and M-Cult, and part of M-Cult’s Gaming the Civic programme.
