Layers of Self - part II

A series about self-expression told through hairstyles, nails, jewelry, and accessories. Where colors, shapes, and textures speak their own language and where personal and cultural references come together. The sisters Sharon and Mah Ngu-Nji share a love for styling, and for them these elements are not merely aesthetic choices, but conscious acts of self-expression. Each layer worn adds a layer to the way identity is shaped, presented, and perceived. An ongoing interplay between the inner self and the visible.

I’m usually a woman of a lot of scattered words, so let me try and say this as briefly as possible. I am eternally grateful to what this space has offered me, the people inside it have thought me, and where the journey has brought me.

I opened this space being 21 and just looking for connection, wanting a living room where other marginalized people could feel at home in. It become much more than I could ever imagine, I’ve found my people, I’ve learnt the hardest lessons, I became confident in myself and my capabilities. Nearing 5 years later, we’ve hosted and curated over 600 events in the spaces, and 60 exhibitions. Bar Bario speaks for itself. And now, the city is changing, the landscape is changing, and what our community needs is changing. I’ve made many mistakes over the years, I’ve carried many moments of joy. I didn’t know what I was doing when I started out, and I just tried to do my best over the years to facilitate the space people were looking for. It wasn’t an easy journey, I’ve had to solve so many new problems, and I’ve had to face myself many times. And I’m now going to take the time to count my losses, and enjoy my wins.

Over the past years, the space that I created became a safer space and a living room for many, and it’s proven to be a space beyond the bricks. We will continue curating events and exhibitions with this heart and passion. I’m ready to explore new ways, our mission still strong, still important - just transforming and figuring out again what it means and how we want to present it.

Thank you to everyone who has worked at Bario, every team member, every bar back, every intern. And thank you to everyone who has been a part of the space, little and big, for just a drink, just a giggle, or any moment - I owe every single one of you everything.

See you all very soon!

Precies een jaar geleden stapte ik in het vliegtuig en begon ik aan mijn reis. Van nog nooit alleen uit eten geweest zijn, nog nooit gebackpacked en nog nooit in een hostel geslapen te hebben naar 2 maanden solo backpacken door Indonesië, what a dopamine rush!!
Het surfen en t lekkerste eten ooit
De mega lieve mensen
De geuren
Het duiken voor de eerste keer
Scooter rijden en achterop zitten
Vulkanen beklimmen
Avondturen beleven
De zee en de stranden en het uitzicht
Verse kokosnoten
Zonsondergangen waar ik never nooit genoeg van krijg
Lachen en in het moment leven

Terug gegaan naar de plek waar ik vroeger naar school ging en diezelfde mensen weer zien na 17 jaar.. zo veel nostalgie i really felt like comming home ❤️
