Berlin - Care -Repair-Heal - “Traces of Decolonialization”

The (Post)Colonial Berlin.
You can see some impressions from the current exhibitions. The debate about coming to terms with and remembering colonialism has long since begun and is sometimes changing the European institutions. How can we care for the deep wounds of our past- What repair possibilities arise and can there ever be a cure? What happens to all the art that was looted and displayed in the museum arenas of the modern era (Paris, London, Berlin)? Berlin invites you to engage with the topic directly. The hashtags refer to institutions that are important and interesting for this field.

Séjour au Brückemuseum 🖼️

The exhibition focuses on the artist group “Die Brücke,” consisting of Schmidt-Rottluff, Kirchner, Pechstein, Heckel… The exhibition is titled “Art and Craft of Die Brücke.”
What is well addressed is that the museum acknowledges that the artists used stolen art from Africa for their own artistic ideas—and never really questioned it… yet took credit for the ideas of the indigenous population. Furthermore, it must be said that the female artists of that time were arguably much more talented. The exhibition features wonderful textile works by Jeane Flieser, Gret Gujer, Lise Gujer, Elisabeth Nielsen-Georgi, Ada Nolde, Erna Schilling, as well as Helene and Leny Spengler, and deserves far greater recognition. During their lifetimes, they stood in
the shadow of these men…
