The SS and the Gestapo didn’t begin with mass murder. They began with language. They labeled Jewish people as “vermin,” “criminal,” “illegals,” and “threats to national purity.” They used bureaucracy, propaganda, and law enforcement to normalize surveillance, detention, deportation, and disappearance. Dehumanization made cruelty feel procedural. It made violence feel justified. It made neighbors look away.
Fascism depends on stripping people of their humanity. It turns human beings into “problems.” It reframes kidnapping as “detainment.” It reframes camps as “processing centers.” It convinces the public that safety requires cruelty — and that questioning power is betrayal.
When ICE and federal law enforcement in America use rhetoric that paints migrants as “invaders,” “infestations,” or inherent criminals, when families are separated in the name of “law and order,” when detention centers are justified as necessary tools of national security, we should recognize the pattern. The language of enforcement becomes the language of fear. Bureaucracy shields brutality. Policy replaces empathy.
Dehumanization is not accidental — it is strategic. It creates an environment where people accept suffering as necessary and stop questioning the systems of governance that exploit them. When entire communities are framed as threats, it becomes easier to expand surveillance, policing powers, and state control — all while ordinary people are told it’s for their protection.
History doesn’t repeat itself exactly. But the mechanisms of oppression — propaganda, fear, bureaucratic language, and the erosion of empathy — are always recognizable.

Everyone keeps calling it a “win” for the city — but let’s be real: it’s a win for the Spurs’ ownership group, not the people actually paying for it. Every concert ticket, every beer sold, every T-shirt, every parking fee — all of it goes straight into the Spurs’ pockets. Not the city’s. Not the community’s.
The “rent” they pay? Pocket change. Meanwhile, the city is setting up massive financing deals — things like TIRZ and PFZ — which basically means they’re borrowing your future tax dollars to fund a billionaire’s playground.
And when the bills come due? It’s not the Spurs paying them. It’s you.
They’re not sharing profits. They’re not paying back the public. They’re not even covering the cost of basic infrastructure moves, like the chill plant relocation — that’s another $200 million floating away.
So sure, they’ll cut a ribbon and call it “economic development.” But the real development is in their bank accounts — not in our neighborhoods, schools, or streets.
San Antonio, don’t fall for the PR spin. The city takes the risk, the Spurs take the bag, and we’re left holding the bill — maybe with a nosebleed seat if we’re lucky.

The Spurs get a billion-dollar arena, full control over parking, concerts, food, and merch — while the city takes on the cost.
