One of the quiet gifts of parenthood the kind that Atleast for me no one told me about is the friendships that begin in the margins of your child’s life. A quick hello at pickup, a shared snack duty, a whispered update about who said what at recess. And suddenly, these women become your lifeline.

You enter this phase thinking ā€œno new friends,ā€ and somehow walk out with a chosen family the only people who truly understand the specific ache and joy of raising kids at the exact same time, in the exact same place.

As Rakim graduates and leaves behind the friends who have shaped his childhood for the last seven years, I’m struck by how much their mothers have shaped mine. The phone calls when someone was mean maybe mine, maybe theirs. The grace we extended, the patience we practiced, the way we always came back to love.

Best friends, fallouts, makeups. Summer vacations, weekend escapes, movie nights, concerts, basketball finals. A whole era for him and for me built alongside these women.

What a beautiful, unexpected thing to grieve. and even more beautiful to be grateful for.

To all of you who walked this road with me you know who you are — I adore you. by @lifeandbread

March was Memorable.

Costa Careyes Highlights:

- Listening to the sound of the waves while hiking on the beach. Sound baths.
- Enjoying tacos on a deserted beach at sunset, watching friends dance like nobody’s watching.
- Movie night on the beach.

Watching Devdas at the Academy Museum theater.

Being part of organizing the Eid Ramadan presentation for the kids’ school.

Having dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in LA with our dear friends Shinji and Susumu Kakinuma, the founders of Seirinkan, one of our favorite restaurants in Tokyo.

Madrid in March

Paris in March

I swear, driving in Paris reminds me of a Third World country.

Returning to the Academy theater to watch my all-time favorite movie, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Listening to the cheers of the audience gave me chills.

And to round off March, I went skiing. This video was taken right after I fell and partially tore my ACL. I didn’t know that yet, which is why I got back on my skis. by @lifeandbread

My whole life, I’ve had a soft spot for immigrants and refugees. I’ve also had a soft spot for kids who never had a say in the families they were born into. I’ve never experienced a natural disaster until now. This one made me think of all the tornadoes in middle America that completely wiped out cities and towns, as well as the coastal states that get hit by hurricanes. It made me consider the process for all of them to rebuild. Who’s donating to their GoFundMe pages? Are they making Amazon wish lists like I have been?

Today, I witnessed a friend post my Amazon wish list for a family on her Instagram, and the whole list was cleared out in less than an hour. In the midst of feeling so grateful for her and her followers, I couldn’t help but think about everyone in this country and in this world who will continue to be affected by natural disasters.

I will say this: this past week, everyone who came together to help—I don’t know their politics, who they voted for, what their religion is, or what their views are on what’s going on in the world. I have no idea what side of town they drove through traffic from because they never once complained while they were there. Everyone just showed up because what happened to them was not caused by one group or one side; they recognized that it could have been done to them. One of us could have been a victim of this. If only we had that insight going into any situation, it would allow us to have empathy for the other side. Text msgs from friends In Louisiana checking in on us ā¤ļø by @lifeandbread

My early Christmas gift to myself: I visited three countries—Spain, Portugal, and France—specifically Madrid, Lisbon, and Paris. This trip turned into what usually happens: me daydreaming about moving to another country. And this trip did not disappoint! Here are a few highlights, not in any particular order, that were truly the highlight of my year.

1. Selfie in the bathroom in Madrid. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø
2. Don’t you all hire real estate agents and tour apartments when you travel?
3. I watched my friend’s kid play the piano and asked for the instructor’s contact because, why not? What if I move there?
4. Potatoes, cauliflower, jumbo prawns, stew, and curry sauce.
5. My favorite restaurant in Lisbon.
6. Hello, Kristof coffee shop—chef’s kiss!
7. The Folks Sé: pistachio latte.
8 & 9 At Dreamin’ Man Coffee Shop. I have a soft spot for people who still read the newspaper. This coffee shop has one of the BEST pour-overs I’ve ever had. The owner worked at Fuglen Tokyo and all of the barista’s are the best.
10 & 11 Friends hosted Christmas dinners, and everyone helped the chef, Geoffroy Langella from Bistrot Des Tournelles, one of the best and kindest chefs in Paris.
12. Dessert: mousse with cheese and ice cream.
13 & 14. Klover Coffee has the sweetest barista named Lee; please tell him the annoying picture-taking American named Khatira sent you.
15. I had an official dinner at Bistrot Des Tournelles, where I learned about the epic dessert, Baba au Rhum.
16. Things that never get old: Eiffel Tower.
17. Just two best friends sitting on a bridge, the Pont des Arts Bridge.
18. To end this journey, it wouldn’t be a local experience where I daydream about living somewhere if I didn’t take the metro.

To be continued, if I somehow convince my family to go on an adventure and move! by @lifeandbread

Roasted chicken broth transformed into a creamy coconut lemon chicken vegetable noodle soup.

It takes a lot to write down a recipe, which is why my dreams of being a food blogger in my early 20s died very quickly. I wish there was a camera following me around so I could know what the heck I'm doing. Anyway, to my surprise, my soup received a lot of DMs asking for the recipe. So, on a beautiful rainy morning, I took the time to actually write it down. But there are no measurements because you really don't need it or I kinda forgot 🫣. This recipe is a variation of many that I have tried throughout the years, and it has turned into a mashup of flavors. I cannot take credit for any of the individual recipes, but at the same time, take all the credit 😜

The slides are so long and unnecessary. I apologize, but there are some gems if you take the time to read them.
